Theater Counts: Great Wall, Fist Fight Barely Challenge Lego Batman
February 17, 2017
The Lego Batman Movie will remain the dominant force in theaters this weekend, according to studio theater counts announced on Thursday. The Great Wall will debut in 3,326 locations, and Fist Fight opens in 3,185. Both are solid numbers, but nowhere near the 4,088 theaters occupied by last week’s winner at the box office. Fifty Shades Darker also remains a big player, with a 3,715 theater count this weekend.
A Cure for Wellness, which has had a creative marketing campaign, but isn’t expected to hit huge numbers, will open in 2,704 theaters.
As this is the last weekend before the Oscars, quite a few nominated films are adding venues. Among them are Best Picture nominees Lion, Manchester by the Sea, Fences, Moonlight, and Arrival, all of which will be playing a most markets, but only in a handful of theaters in each.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Get Out is set for the widest release, by the looks of things, although we’re still waiting for official confirmation on a theater count for Collide.
