Theater Counts (Updated): Kong Takes on Logan in 3,846 Locations
March 9, 2017
The first big head-to-head battle of the year will take place in movie houses across the country this weekend, as Kong: Skull Island attempts to wrest top spot at the box office from Logan. The big ape movie will have a challenge ahead of it, with Logan having posted the 4th-biggest weekend in March last weekend with $88.4 million, and continuing to play in 4,071 theaters. Kong, meanwhile, opens in 3,846 venues, and will most likely need to average more than $10,000 in each of them to come close to a victory.
Both films will be helped by the limited amount of competition. The next biggest opener is Bollywood film Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which debuts in 152 locations. Get Out is adding 205 theaters in its third weekend, which will take it above 3,000 for the first time. It should top $20 million again, but will be a in distant third place when the final tallies come in.
Looking ahead, Beauty and the Beast will, as expected, launch in over 4,000 theaters next weekend, per Disney, while BH Tilt will launch The Belko Experiment in 1,200 theaters or so.
