The Love Witch

There are a few Oscar-nominated films on this week’s list. However, it was still hard to come up with a Pick of the Week release. Most of them were like Elle with great reviews and weak extras. The DVD for Drunk History: Season Four has more than two hours of extras, but I admit it is an acquired taste. Fortunately, we do have a clear winner: The Love Witch on Blu-ray.

Accidental Courtesy - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A documentary about Daryl Davies, an African-American musician who has talked to many, many members of the KKK and helped them leave the white supremacist movement. It’s an amazing story and worth checking out.

CHiPs: The Complete Fifth Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This DVD is selling rather well. Perhaps I underestimated the movie’s box office chances.

Collateral Beauty - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is busted Oscar-bait in the worst way. Just avoid it.

Drunk History: Season Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I put in a request for a screener, but it hasn’t arrived yet. If it doesn’t arrive by Friday, I will order it myself. I’m that much of a fan of the show.

Elle - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
Isabelle Huppert plays a woman who is attacked in her home and raped, but who doesn’t react how society tells us how women should react. She earned an Oscar Nomination for her performance, but strangely the film itself was passed over for Best Foreign-language Oscar. Many thought it would win, so not even getting nominated was a real snub. The film earned stellar reviews and the extras are better than a lot of foreign-language imports gets. (There’s a making of featurette and a tribute to Isabelle Huppert.) It is a contender for Pick of the Week.

Fences - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is the latest directorial effort from Denzel Washington. The film earned amazing reviews and earned four Oscar nominations. Viola Davis even won her first Oscar. Clearly it is worth picking up and if the Blu-ray / DVD has good extras, it is a Pick of the Week contender. Unfortunately, it has weak extras. The DVD has nothing, while the Blu-ray has just under 40 minutes of making of / behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Ghost in the Shell - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is the third Blu-ray release for this film, but it is selling well. This could be a good sign for the upcoming live-action movie.

Jackie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I got to the review a week late, because the screener arrived late. Was it worth the wait? Is it truly an Award-worthy film? Or is it busted Oscar-bait? Read our review to find out.

Jetsons & WWE: Robo-Wrestlemania - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I’m not a fan of the WWE, but I have to be impressed by the sales their animated direct-to-DVD movies are pulling in.

The Love Witch - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-reviewed releases on this week’s list. It stars Samantha Robinson as Elaine, the titular love witch. The film is inspired by the 1970s sexploitation films, but has a modern sensibility to it. It is a limited release and these films rarely have a lot of extras; however, the DVD / Blu-ray has an audio commentary track, behind-the-scenes featurette, interview, a dozen deleted / extended / alternate scenes, and more. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries: The Complete Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
If you like Game of Thrones, especially The Queen of Thorns, as well as British murder mystery shows, then you will likely want to check out this series. It stars Diana Rigg as the titular Mrs. Bradley, who solves mysteries in the 1920s. The set is called The Complete Series, but there were only five hour-long episodes, which is why I didn’t put it down with the other Megasets.

Newhart: The Final Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
One of the funniest sitcoms ever made and one of the best twist-endings of any show ever.

Passengers - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This movie should have been so good, but there is a plot point that is just terrible. Spoilers ahead... Chris Pratt’s character is part of a space colonization mission where everyone is in cryo-sleep, but something goes wrong and he’s woken up prematurely. He’s alone with the AI for a while, but sees Jennifer Lawrence in cryo-sleep, falls in love, and wakes her up and doesn’t tell her he’s the reason she woke up prematurely. And you have to remember this mission will last nearly a century, so she will die before they reach their destination. He has killed her, but the movie wants us to root for him and for the pair of them to get together in the end. This is utter crap. This is not acceptable and could have been so easily fixed, firstly, change Jennifer Lawrence’s character last name to Anderson. Bear with me. And then have Chris Pratt’s character realize that there is a malfunction that needs to be fixed, panics, and looks through the passenger manifesto to find someone who can help fix the problems. Jennifer Lawrence’s character is the first person alphabetically who has the skills needed, so he wakes her up. She would still get angry that he woke her up and not a member of the crew, but at least there’s a reason he woke her up besides he’s lonely. There’s still conflict there, but Chris Pratt doesn’t come across as a super creep. I guess if you like the cast, it is worth a rental, but even then, I would wait a few months and watch it on Netflix.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I watched season one and love it, but I haven’t seen season two yet. The reviews are 100% positive, so that’s a good sign.

The Valley of the Gwangi - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Yet another dinosaur movie from Warner Bros. coming out on Blu-ray. I believe this is the third such film to come out in a month. This is not as well known as the other two, but still worth picking up for fans of the genre.
