International Box Office: Beauty Holds Off King Kong with $119.2 million

Beauty and the Beast remained in first place on the international chart with $119.2 million in 50 markets for totals of $373.3 million internationally and $692.3 million worldwide. The film had two major market openings this past weekend scoring first place in Australia with $10.02 million on 706 screens, including previews. It also topped the chart in France with $7.9 million over the weekend, $8.4 million including previews. Its biggest market overall was the U.K., where it added $15.41 million in 636 theaters over the weekend for a two-week total of $49.82 million. At the end of the weekend, Disney’s share of the worldwide box office was just over $300 million, so unless the movie cost more to advertise than it did to make, it has broken even. Furthermore, even if the film had no more major markets left to open in, it would be on pace to reach $1 billion to $1.1 billion worldwide. With Japan and a few more smaller markets left, it could top $1.2 billion.

Kong: Skull Island had an explosive opening in China, but still had to settle for second place with $93.0 million in 67 markets for totals of $258.6 million internationally and $392.3 million worldwide. The film earned $71.56 million over the weekend in China for a total opening of $72.92 million. The film has almost earned enough to cover its entire production budget, meaning it should break even sometime on the home market.

Power Rangers struggled with just $18.7 million in 62 markets. The film earned $3.0 million, while Brazil was close behind with $2.1 million. The film earned second place in the U.K. with $1.97 million in 478 theaters; however, that’s equivalent to earning $10 million to $12 million here, given the relative size of the two markets. This is not enough to break even.

The Boss Baby entered the top five for the first time with its international run starting a week earlier than its US release, earning fourth place with $16.3 million in five countries. The film had a monster opening in Russia earning $11.35 million on 1,282 screens. On the other hand, the film struggled during its opening in Australia last weekend with $1.96 million on 273 screens and after two weeks release it has only managed $4.03 million.

Life flopped with $15.85 million on 7,011 screens in 69 markets. Its biggest market was Russia where it earned second place with $3.08 million on 1142 screens. On the other hand, it only managed third place in both Australia ($1.21 million on 239 screens) and in Mexico ($1.20 million on 590). It only managed sixth place in the U.K. with $927,000 in 438 theaters.
