Friday Estimates: Baby Bosses Beast with $15.5 Million

April 1, 2017

The Boss Baby

The Boss Baby opened in first place on Friday with $15.5 million. This is higher than our original prediction and the adjusted prediction based on Thursday previews. Some are expecting an opening weekend of over $50 million, but that seems a tad high. The reviews have continued to improve and are now 49% positive, and the film earned an A minus from CinemaScore, which is bog standard for a family film. I think the direct competition from Beauty and the Beast will prevent it from getting to $50 million, meaning there will be a virtual tie on top of the charts over the weekend.

Beauty and the Beast landed in second place on Friday with $13.03 million, which puts it on pace for $50 million over the weekend. Its reviews are better than The Boss Baby’s, and this isn’t its opening weekend, so it will bounce back more on Saturday, likely scoring first place. By Sunday, it will likely have erased Friday’s deficit.

Ghost in the Shell is failing to live up to lowered expectations, and earned third place with $7.66 million. Its reviews are barely more than 40% positive, while it only managed a B from CinemaScore. Add in the source material and the inherent Fanboy Effect and it likely will struggle to get to $20 million over the weekend. Unless it is a huge hit internationally, it won’t break even any time soon.

Power Rangers fell more than 70% compared to last Friday, earning just $4.02 million. It will bounce back on Saturday, but falling 65% to $14 million during its sophomore stint will likely put $100 million domestically out of reach.

Both Life and CHiPs will fall around 50% after pulling in $1.66 million and $1.1 million respectively. Neither were hits during their opening weekends and this won’t help.
