Theater Counts: Smurfs Open in 3,610 Theaters
April 7, 2017
Smurfs: The Lost Village is the widest new release this weekend, but, just as it’s struggling to get out the gate at the box office, it also struggled to win over theater owners faced with the choice of pushing Beauty and the Beast and The Boss Baby off their biggest screens, or out of the theater entirely. Beauty remains the widest release for the third straight weekend, and plays in 3,969 venues this time around. Boss Baby expands in its second weekend to 3,829. That makes for a daunting task for Smurfs to break out.
Going in Style starts out in a strong 3,061 theaters, and could end up the best new release. We haven’t received a theater count number for The Case for Christ from Pure Flix.
Gifted opens in 56 theaters for Fox Searchlight, and the distributor plans to expand it aggressively, with an increase to about 850 theaters on Wednesday next week, and 1,000 theaters on Friday.
Even if Gifted picks up some momentum, nothing will compare to The Fate of the Furious, which is essentially the first tentpole of the Summer. It will open in an estimated 4,200 theaters, which is even more than the 4,004 theaters that Furious 7 debuted in two years ago, on its way to a $147 million opening weekend.
