The Lost City of Z

The Lost City of Z led the way on the theater average chart with an average of $27,544 in four theaters. The film is expanding into several hundred more theaters this Friday, so this is a great start. The overall number one film, The Fate of the Furious, was next with an average of $22,920. Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer opened with nearly $100,000 in five theaters for an average of $19,842. The final film in the $10,000 club was Chasing Trane with $16,626 in its lone theater.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases were a mess. There were a couple that did well, but the vast majority of them missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000/theater). A Quiet Passion opened with an average of $7,638 in six theaters. Had it opened during Awards Season, it likely would have done better. My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea was next with an average of $4,561 in three theaters. This is not a bad start for an animated film in limited release. On the other hand, Finding Oscar struggled with an average of $2,365.

There were plenty of other new limited releases, all of which missed the Mendoza Line. Glory was the closest with an average of $1,858 in two theaters, while Tomorrow was right behind with an average of $1,844 in four theaters. Heal the Living and Seven Beauties were neck and neck with averages of $1,588 and $1,536 respectively. Tommy’s Honour was one of the widest limited releases of the week, but it only managed an average of $1,250 in 167 theaters. Swept Away was re-released, but only managed $1,011 in its lone theater. Finally there’s Spark: A Space Tail, the widest limited release of the week. It bombed with an average of $320 in 365 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Your Name hit $2 million before the weekend and $3 million over the weekend. Its legs are not good for a limited release, but not unexpected for an Anime release.
  • Gifted expanded into over 1,000 theaters on Wednesday and that helped it reach $1 million before the weekend. By the end of the weekend, the film’s running tally was over $4 million.
  • The Zookeeper’s Wife reached $10 million over the weekend.
