April 26, 2017

The Fate of the Furious

The Fate of the Furious is living fast, but plummeting just as fast down 64% to $158.1 million on 19,757 screens in 65 territories for totals of $745.03 million internationally and $908.34 million worldwide. The film is now the biggest hit of 2017 on the international chart and is behind only Beauty and the Beast on the 2017 worldwide chart. The film’s biggest opening of the past weekend came in Poland where it earned $2.7 million on 187 screens, which is the best opening for the Fast and the Furious franchise in that market. Its biggest market overall continues to be China, where it added $55.28 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $321.65 million. The is the second biggest box office for a Hollywood release in China, behind only Furious 7, which earned $390.87 million there.

The Boss Baby remained in second place, again, earning $30.0 million in 78 markets for totals of $221.1 million internationally and $358.1 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was Italy, where it earned $1.68 million over the weekend for a four-day opening of $2.29 million.

Beauty and the Beast remained in third place with $22.9 million in 50 markets for totals of $629.2 million internationally and $1.100 billion worldwide. The film remains the biggest worldwide hit of 2017 and has climbed into 17th place on the all-time chart. The film earned $12.8 million during its opening in Japan; even better, films tend to last a long time in Japan, so it could earn another $50 million in that market.

Smurfs: The Lost Village also stayed put, remaining in fourth place with $22.07 million on 16,428 screens in 79 markets for totals of 100.94 million internationally and $134.36 million worldwide. The film debuted in second place in China with $11.26 million over the weekend for a total opening of $11.31 million including previews. This is actually really good for an animated film in that market. The film only cost $60 million to make and the studio’s share of the box office so far is about about $55 million. It will need quite a bit of help on the home market, but it could break even, eventually.

Mr. Pride vs Miss Prejudice opened in third place in China with $8.30 million over the weekend for a total opening of $10.11 million.

One last note, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 started its international run on the 25th earning $6.6 million in three markets. Australia was the biggest of these markets and the film earned $2.9 million on Tuesday, $4.5 million including previews. The $2.9 million figure is the second best opening day in Australia for the MCU, behind only The Avengers. Granted, it is way too soon to tell where it will finish on the worldwide chart, but this start is a reason to be optimistic.
