Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 remained in first place on the international chart with $123.8 million in 55 markets for totals of $282.6 million internationally and $429.1 million worldwide. The film is already ahead of the worldwide totals of a couple of MCU alumni, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger. The film opened in first place in a trio of major markets this past weekend: China, South Korea, and Russia. Its biggest opening came in China, no surprise there, where it earned $48.56 million over the weekend for a total opening of $49.47 million, including limited previews. It earned $12.79 million in 1,370 screens over the weekend in Russia. The film earned $6.92 million on 1,218 screens in South Korea over the weekend for a total opening of $13.20 million. In each of these markets, Vol 2 showed strong growth compared to the original Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, Vol 2 earned more during its opening weekend than the original earned in total ($11.0 million). At this pace, the film will have no trouble matching the original worldwide and its legs will determine if it can reach $1 billion.

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is an Indian film and as such sometimes accurate box office numbers are harder to find. The film made $43.92 million in 10 markets over the weekend for a total of $131.14 million internationally. This is the biggest box office ever for an Indian film of all time. Furthermore, it doesn’t appear to be slowing down as much as Bollywood films usually do.

The Fate of the Furious was next with $30.1 million on 15,363 screens in 66 markets for totals of $955.05 million internationally and $1.162 billion worldwide. The film’s biggest market of the weekend was China, where it added $4.73 million on 6,129 screens over the weekend for a total of $379.92 million after two weeks of release. It has beaten Furious 7 in terms of local currency, but has yet to match its predecessor in terms of the American dollar.

The Boss Baby bounced back into the top five with $17.0 million in 67 markets over the weekend for totals of $278.0 million internationally and $434.5 million worldwide. It rose thanks to its third place opening in South Korea. The film managed $5.34 million opening on 1,116 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.24 million.

Beauty and the Beast rounded out the top five with $11.9 million in 38 markets of totals of $698.1 million internationally and $1.186 billion worldwide. The film’s biggest market remained Japan, where it earned $8.5 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $60.7 million. Japan is now the film’s third biggest market behind the U.K. ($88.9 million) and China ($85.8 million). Given the film’s legs in Japan, it won’t be long before it is the top market for Beauty and the Beast.
