Thursday Night Previews: King Arthur Pulls $1.15 million from Previews

Snatched

As expected, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword topped Snatched at the box office during Thursday night previews earning $1.15 million. This is lower than anticipated and only about half what John Wick: Chapter Two managed earlier this year. Furthermore, its reviews are much worse at 26% positive, so even though it is not a sequel, it likely won’t have a strong multiplier during its opening weekend. It appears our prediction of just over $20 million is a little too optimistic. We will know more tomorrow when Friday’s estimates are released.

Snatched was well back with $650,000; however, films aimed at women rarely do as well during previews as those aimed at younger men, so it should bounce back a lot more on Friday and might even overtake King Arthur: Legend of the Sword on the daily chart by Saturday or Sunday. As for its weekend chances, it didn’t do as well as Trainwreck did ($1.8 million) but it did beat Hot Pursuit, which has a similar feel. If it can match that film’s legs, and its better reviews suggest it could, then it will make about $20 million over the weekend. On the other hand, using Trainwreck as a guide, it will barely crack $10 million. That said, Trainwreck opened during the summer, so that helps inflate preview numbers. We will know more tomorrow.
