Theater Averages: Abacus Counts its Blessing with $12,528

Abacus: Small Enough to Jail

The only film in the $10,000 club was Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, which earned $12,528 in its lone theater during its opening weekend. The only other film that came close was Alien: Covenant, which earned an average of $9,615.

There weren’t many other new limited releases and none came close to the $10,000 mark. The best of the rest was Afterimage with $5,832 in one theater, while Icaros: A Vision was close behind with $5,510, also in one theater. The Woman Who Left was well back with $2,018, again in one theater. The Commune was the widest limited release we have numbers for, but it missed the Mendoza Line ($2,000) with an average of just $1,321 in seven theaters. Soul on a String was even further back with an average of $678 in two theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer hit $2 million over the weekend and while I don’t think it will expand significantly beyond this point, $3 million still seems likely.
  • Their Finest hit $3 million just before the weekend, but $4 million seems like a stretch.
  • Lowriders got to $3 million just before the weekend and $4 million late in the weekend. Its theater average collapsed, so it likely won’t expand significantly from this point.
