Theater Counts: The Mummy Goes Big
June 9, 2017
The Mummy is looking like a big bet that isn’t paying off, but it won’t be for lack of trying. The big-budget creature feature will play in 4,035 theaters this weekend—almost as many Wonder Woman started in last weekend. That’s big by any standards, and the new film is eating up screen space from Pirates of the Caribbean, which is losing 597 theaters this weekend. But it’s a crush for blockbusters right now, and the problem is only going to get worse next weekend…
Disney predicts Cars 3 will grab 3,900 locations next Friday; Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures will launch 47 Meters Down in 3,500 venues; Rough Night is hoping for 3,000 theaters; and All Eyez on Me should debut in around 2,400. That’s a lot of real-estate that will have to come from somewhere (hint: now’s the time to see Guardians of the Galaxy or Alien: Covenant, if you want to see them on a good screen).
