Thursday Night Previews: The Eyez Have it earning $3.1 million

June 16, 2017

All Eyez on Me

All Eyez on Me surprised analysts earning $3.1 million during its previews last night. This is better than The Mummy’s $2.66 million earned last weekend, while its reviews are also marginally better. Granted, its Tomatometer score is just 27% positive, so that could kill the film’s legs by Saturday, but this is still a very positive start and the movie will almost assuredly top our prediction of just under $20 million.

Cars 3 was right behind with $2.8 million during its previews. On the one hand, this is a mere fraction of the $9.2 million Finding Dory earned this weekend last year. However, we shouldn’t assume the two films will have the same legs. Finding Dory attracted a lot of adult animation fans, who would be more willing to see the film late Thursday rather than waiting for an earlier showing on Friday. Meanwhile, Cars 2 was clearly aimed at younger boys, so adults likely stayed away this time. On the positive side, it is the best previews for any animated film released this year, topping The Lego Batman Movie’s $2.2 million opening from February. Granted, more kids are out of school at the moment, so this was expected, but a 27% increase during previews should translate into a small increase over the full weekend. I’m satisfied with our $58 million prediction.

47 Meters Down managed $745,000 during its previews. It Comes at Night made $700,000 last weekend, finishing the weekend with $5.99 million. 47 Meters Down’s reviews are worse, but I have to assume it will do better than a D from CinemaScore. This could help it earn $7 million or more over the weekend.

Rough Night struggled with just $700,000 last night. By comparison, Bad Moms pulled in $2 million last year. The two films have similar reviews, so if they have similar legs, then Rough Night is in serious trouble.
