New Releases are Nearly Impossible to Find on Home Market Charts

New releases were nearly shut out of the charts this week, however, one new release that did make the charts was Mission: Impossible: III, which earned top spot with $9.08 million. Second place remained the territory of The Break-Up for the third week in a row as it took in $5.39 million for the week and $21.20 in total. Click also hung tough remaining in third place with $4.98 million over the week for a total of $31.70 million after four. On the other hand, Nacho Libre fell from first to fourth with $4.65 million while its two-week total was $11.88 million. Rounding out the top five was Monster House with $4.28 million.

The only other new release to chart was Keeping Up with the Steins, which managed just 34th place with $540,000.

Mission: Impossible: III also won the week on the sales chart with 3.7 million units. This does not include the 20,000 units of high definition releases, (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray), which is a new record for the format. To put this into perspective, one time chart topping releases, Serenity as sold an estimated 10,000 units while the total number of players is only about 45,000. For the second week in a row, second place went to Over the Hedge while Monster House fell from first to third. Nacho Libre had a similar decline falling from second to fourth while Click climbed back into the top five.

The only other new release to chart this week was Ghost Whisperer - The Complete First Season, which placed 18th.

Over on the TV on DVD sales chart, The O.C. - The Complete Third Season remained in first place with Ghost Whisperer - The Complete First Season opening in a solid second. The rest of the top five were all older releases with Lost - The Complete Second Season coming in third place. Fourth and fifth went to Grey's Anatomy with Season 2 just beating out Season 1.
