July 6, 2017

The Little Hours

The Little Hours led the way on the theater average chart with an average of $30,780 in two theaters. This is Gunpowder and Sky’s first release, which makes its first place finish even more impressive. Last week’s winner, The Big Sick, held on well in second place with an average of $23,267 in 71 theaters. The only other film in the $10,000 club was the overall first place film, Despicable Me 3, which earned an average of $15,993.

The only other new limited releases to come halfway to the $10,000 mark was Le Trou, which earned $6,756 over the weekend and $8,950 from Wednesday through Sunday in one theater. The B-Side was well back with an average of $4,012 in three theaters. Pop Aye only managed $3,598 in one theater over the weekend, but it earned $12,300 over five. Marie Curie struggled with an average of $3,100 in six theaters. Reset was one of the wider releases playing in 20 theaters, but it only managed an average of $2,714. The Skyjacker’s Tale missed the Mendoza Line by quite a margin with just $1,097 in one theater. 2:22 had the third worse opening weekend theater average of the year with an average of just $98 in three theaters. Only Trespass Against Us ($81) and Detour ($29) had worse averages this year.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Big Sick reached $1 million and $2 million over the weekend. It is expanding further on Friday with a planned wide expansion next week.
  • The Beguiled did one better crossing $1 million, $2 million, and $3 million over the weekend. Its average is $4,694, which is good enough for a little more expansion, but it won’t expand truly wide.
  • Beatriz at Dinner got to $3 million before the weekend and $4 million over the weekend. Its average is low enough that it will start losing theaters, but that won’t prevent it from getting to another milestone or two.
