International Box Office: Wolf Warriors 2 goes for the Throat with $148.10 million

Wolf Warriors 2 dominated the international box office with $132.88 million over the weekend in its native China, for a four-day opening of $148.10 million. This is more than the rest of the top five earned combined.
Dunkirk was pushed into second place with $45.6 million in 63 markets for totals of $131.3 million internationally and $232.6 million worldwide. The film opened in Germany, but struggled with just $2.2 million on 634 screens, while it only managed $2.04 million in Mexico, including previews. These are not particularly strong openings given its run here. On the other hand, the film was down just 17% in the U.K. adding $10.81 million on 663 screens to its running tally, which now sits at $35.46 million. This is almost twice as much as it as earned here, given the relative size of the two markets.
Despicable Me 3 slipped to third place with $37.9 million on 13,847 screens in 63 markets for totals of $592.40 million internationally and $822.80 million worldwide. The film’s only major market opening was South Korea, where it earned second place with $5.88 million on 1,057 screens for a total opening of $8.03 million. While the film was only able to earn second place in that market (More on the number one film in a second.) this was still the best opening in the franchise, which is great news. The film saw a significant decline domestically, but it is doing a lot better internationally.
The Founding of an Army debuted in second place in its native China and fourth place internationally with $24.49 million over the weekend for a total opening of $30.17 million
Battleship Island dominated its native South Korea with $18.48 million on 2,019 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $27.69 million. This is more than 60% of the total South Korean box office over the weekend.
