International Top Five - Borat Remains Buoyant

November 15, 2006

Borat was again the top box office draw on the international scene taking in $15.37 million on 1147 screens in 20 markets for a total of $43.16 million after two weeks of release. The film opened in three markets, but they were of the smaller variety earning $287,000 on 17 screens in Greece, $51,000 on 10 in Bulgaria and $29,000 on 4 in Serbia. The vast majority of the film's weekend total came from the U.K. where it repeated in first place with $8.62 million on 430 screens for a two-week total of $27.13 million. Meanwhile in Germany the film grew by 2%, but was still stuck in second place with $2.76 million on 310 screens for a total of $6.35 million in that market. This week the film opens in France, Spain, and other smaller markets, but it will have a lot of competition from Bond and it will take a minor miracle for the film to not be knocked out of top spot.

Open Season returned to second place with $9.10 million on 4569 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $63.56 million. The film opened in third place in Germany with $1.90 million on 706 screens while it claimed second in Spain with $1.67 million on 400 screens.

Saw III climbed into third place with $7.82 million on 1440 screens in 16 markets for a total of $27.90 million. The film opened in first place in horror mad Spain with $2.88 million on 300 screens over the weekend and $2.99 million in total. On the other hand, the film fell more than 50% during its sophomore stint in Australia down to $928,000 on 208 screens for a two-week total of $3.53 million.

The Devil Wears Prada is shedding screens and markets as it only has one more major market left to open in and that's Japan at the end of the month. However, its $7.18 million weekend haul on 3115 screens in 32 markets was still a fantastic result and enough to lift its total to $162.90 million. The film did have one opening in the United Arab Emirates where it earned an impressive $107,000 on 19 screens but its biggest markets were holdovers, for instance, the film added $1.41 million on 603 screens in Germany for a total of $19.52 million after a month of release.

The Departed returned to the top five with $7.16 million on 1835 screens in 30 markets for a total of $60.04 million internationally. The film opened in first place in Brazil with $721,000 on 150 screens and in Denmark with $355,000 on 30 screens over the weekend and $412,000 in total. The film also did well in Holland but had to settle for second place with $505,000 on 62 screens over the weekend and $519,000 in total. The film was even better in holdover markets including Spain where it added $1.35 million on 367 screens over the weekend and $7.78 million in total while it remained in first place in Italy with $1.35 million on 373 screens for a $8.27 million total.
