August 24, 2017

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation climbed into first place internationally last weekend, with $42.0 million on 13,209 screens in 56 markets for totals of $96.7 million overseas, and $160.9 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Mexico, where it earned a first-place $8 million on 3,086 screens, while it also earned first place in Brazil with $4.4 million on 1,263 screens. However, its most impressive market was India, where it earned first place with $4.4 million on 1,159 screens. It is very rare for non-Indian films to top the chart in India.

Wolf Warriors 2 finally relinquished top spot, slipping to second place with $37 million over the weekend for totals of $773 million internationally and $775 million worldwide. This includes another first place finish in China, where it added $36.36 million over the weekend to its running tally, which hit $770.60 million. This is the second-biggest result in any single market. It won’t last long enough to reach first place, but this is still a stunning result.

Paradox opened in second place in China and third place internationally with $32.13 million over the weekend for a five-day opening of $41.89 million.

War for the Planet of the Apes climbed a spot to fourth place with $20.5 million in 47 markets over the weekend for totals of $205.0 million internationally and $346.0 million worldwide. The film opened in third place in South Korea with $5.16 million over the weekend for a total opening of $11.34 million. However, it did open on Tuesday instead of the usual Thursday and, had it opened on Thursday, its weekend numbers would have likely been better, perhaps enough to earn first place.

The Emoji Movie entered the international top five for the first time in fifth place with $11.75 million on 8,115 screens in 65 markets for totals of $53.86 million internationally and $125.72 million worldwide. This is enough for Sony to cover its entire production budget, meaning it will break even sometime during its home market run, at the latest. This weekend was led by a first place opening in Russia, where it earned $2.48 million on 2,050 screens. The film also added $1.32 million in 605 theaters for a three-week total of $11.10 million.
