Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle made its international debut and it was mostly really good news, as it topped the chart with $61.18 million on 11,623 screens in 64 markets. Its biggest market was the U.K., where it earned $11.40 million on 602 screens. This is a massive improvement over the $6.4 million its predecessor opened with. Likewise, this film earned $6.01 million on 1300 screens in Russia, up from $3.5 million for the first film. It wasn’t able to grow that much in Australia, but it did increase its haul to $4.56 million on 405 screens, up from $3.22 million on 372 for the original film. The film has yet to open in France, South Korea, China, and Japan, so this is a great start. It very likely won’t have the same legs, but even so, $400 million worldwide is a solid milestone to aim for, given this start.

It remained in second place, again, this time earning $38.3 million on 12,275 screens in 59 markets for totals of $211.7 million internationally and $477.8 million worldwide. Its biggest new market was France, where it earned $6.3 million, but it also did very well in Argentina, with $4.1 million on 421 screens. The film has yet to open in Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as some smaller markets, so it should get to $300 million internationally and $600 million worldwide.

War for the Planet of the Apes fell from first to third with $19.3 million on 17 screens over the weekend for totals of $325.4 million internationally and $471.7 million worldwide. The film remained in first place in China, despite falling 69% to $18.33 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $98.91 million. It should get to $500 million, which is significantly lower than the previous installment in the franchise, but still enough to be profitable.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard returned to the top five thanks to its debut in China. It earned fourth place overall with $15.4 million in 29 markets for totals of $88.8 million internationally and $162.2 million worldwide. This includes a second-place, $13.53 million opening weekend in China, $13.59 million including previews. The film has yet to open in Italy, so perhaps it will have enough legs to get to $200 million worldwide. I think that’s asking too much. On the other hand, it only cost $30 million to make and the studio’s share is about $70 million. Unless it cost significantly more to market than to make, the film has already broken even.

The Lego Ninjago Movie opened in fifth place with just $10.5 million in 38 markets. Its biggest market was Russia, where it earned second place with $1.63 million on 1,257 screens. It also earned second place in Germany with $1.42 million on 558 screens. This is well below the opening of the previous Lego movies, which further puts a damper on the franchise as a whole.

Despicable Me 3 added $2.6 million on 3,063 screens in 46 markets to its running tally, which now sits at $758.25 million internationally and $1.020 billion worldwide. It is just about to overtake Zootopia for fifth place on the all-time animated chart.
