Home Market Releases for October 10th, 2017

October 10, 2017

Maudie

It’s a good week for the home market with top notch releases in nearly every category. Baby Driver is the biggest first run release of the week and one of the best releases. The Lure is a foreign-language film and one of two Criterion Collection releases in competition for Pick of the Week. Maudie is a Canadian limited release that did surprisingly well in theaters. Finally there’s Othello, which first came out more than 60 years ago. The only thing we are missing is a TV on DVD title. As for the winner, I’m giving Pick of the Week to, Othello, while Maudie wins Puck of the Week for Best Canadian Release.

Baby Driver - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film is actually based on the failed Ant-Man script Edgar Wright wrote before he left that film. That’s a strange origin for a film, but the movie earned stellar reviews and was a surprise $100 million hit. There are a ton of extras, including two audio commentary tracks, making of featurettes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted / extended scenes, and much more. It is easily worth picking up and a clear contender for Pick of the Week.

The Beguiled - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The latest from Sofia Coppola missed expectations, both with critics and at the box office. I would like to point out the film earned 78% positive reviews and just over $10 million in limited release, but this was still disappointing compared to expectations. There are only two extras on the DVD / Blu-ray, but that’s still enough to be worth a solid purchase.

Fallen - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A young adult adaptation in the supernatural romance sub-genre. The reviews are terrible and it barely went anywhere in theaters. I wouldn’t even mention it most weeks, but the list of new releases on the home market this week it is rather shallow.

Good Witch: Season 3 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A Hallmark Channel original series that was based on a series of TV movies. There are no reviews, but like most Hallmark Channel productions, you probably already know if you are in the target demographic or not.

The Green Slime - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
A B-movie Sci-fi film from the 1960s. It wasn’t particularly good when it came out, but fans of B-movies should enjoy themselves watching this one.

The House - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film has so much talent involved in this film, but the end result is a mess. There are not many extras on the DVD / Blu-ray and even if you like the cast, there are better options out there.

Impractical Jokers: The Complete Fifth Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A hidden camera prank show. No thanks.

Justice League Action: Season One, Part One - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I have zero interest in the Justice League movie, but at least the cartoons are still high quality.

Kill, Baby... Kill! - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This is an Italian horror movie from the 1960s. It was directed by Mario Bava and I don’t think it is exaggerating to say it is among his best. Extras include an audio commentary track and two interview featurettes. That’s a lot for a film that’s 50 years old and more than enough to be worth picking up.

The Leftovers: The Complete Third Season - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This show earned great reviews, but it lost half of its audience from season one to season two, so season three was its last. Those who stuck with it till the end will want to pick up the final season, but that doesn’t include most who started watching the show.

The Lure: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This is a movie about mermaid sisters living in an alternate Poland of the 1980s and being singers in a night club. It’s bizarre, the reviews are amazing, and it is being released by Criterion Collection. I don’t know what else I need to say. Buy it. Buy it now.

Maudie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is a Canadian film about Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis, played by Sally Hawkins. The film did surprisingly well in limited release earning $6 million. I didn’t think a movie about a Canadian artist would do this well. Extras include an audio commentary track and a making of featurette. It is certainly worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the week.

Naruto Shippuden: Uncut: Set 32 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
One of the longest running Anime shows ever made. They still have six more DVDs they need to release. I wonder if they will put out a complete series box set.

One Piece: Season Nine, Voyage Three - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Speaking of long running Anime shows. 800 episodes and counting.

Othello: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Orson Welles wrote and starred in this Shakespearean adaptation. There are a couple of new interview featurettes here, as well as previous audio commentary tracks, short film, etc. It is clearly worth picking up.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This film was made in 2007, but this is the first time it is coming out on DVD / Blu-ray. It really wasn’t worth the wait.

Reign: Season 4 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This is a CW show, so it should come as no real surprise that it was too much of a soap opera for my tastes. Also coming out this week is the Complete Series.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete Ninth Season - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It has been a long time since I reviewed an episode of the TV show, so I don’t know if the quality has remained strong. I loved the most recent movie, so if the show has half the level of jokes, it is worth watching.

Wish Upon - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Theatrical)
Video on Demand (Unrated)
This lowish-budget horror movie failed to find an audience in theaters. Did it deserve this fate? Or is it an undiscovered gem? Read our review for my opinion.

Wonder Woman - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4k Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is the first film of the DCEU to earn glowing reviews. Did it earn this praise? Or is it only good by comparison? Check out our review to find out.

There are a lot of Christmas releases on this week’s list, nearly all of them are TV on DVD releases. On a side note, I know Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving movie and not a Christmas movie, but I love the movie and any chance I get to mention it I will.
