War for the Planet of the Apes

There are not many films on this week’s list of home market releases, but there are several bigger titles making their home market debut. Some, like Cars 3, are only coming out on Video on Demand, but there are also some serious Pick of the Week contenders hitting DVD / Blu-ray as well. Of these contenders, War for the Planet of the Apes has the best combination of reviews and extras on the Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Annabelle: Creation - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This film is much better than the original Annabelle was, but it is still only good and not great. Extras include an audio commentary track, two featurettes, two short films, and deleted / extended scenes. It’s worth picking up, especially for a horror fan looking for a movie to watch during Halloween, but it is not a Pick of the Week contender.

The Emoji Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is one of the worst movies of the year, but it made enough to likely justify a sequel. The DVD has plenty of extras, while the Blu-ray has a couple of exclusive extras. If you have kids and they saw and liked the movie, then it is worth picking up. However, there is almost no cross-over appeal here. Even if you have kids in the right age range, but they haven’t seen it yet, there are better options out there and this movie isn’t worth the risk.

Fairy Tail: Collection Ten - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
This is one of the few Anime titles that routinely lands on this list. The extras are better than the vast majority of Anime titles get, as it not only has the clean credit sequences, but also audio commentary tracks on four episodes and a trio of Pride Guides. If you like the show, it is certainly worth picking up. If you haven’t seen the show, it is worth checking out, but you’ve got over 200 episodes to catch up on.

An Inconvenient Sequel - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This documentary is not as good as the original was, but it is still worth picking up. Extras include a couple of featurettes and a music video. This isn’t great, but it is enough to be worth picking up.

Maudie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
I thought this came out two weeks ago and named it Puck of the Week. I’m not sure if it was pushed back, or if Amazon had the wrong date then, or if Amazon has the wrong date now. Either way, it is worth picking up for sure.

Midsomer Murders: Series 19, Part 2 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Two 90-minute episodes for $17.49. Great show, but that’s asking a lot for TV on DVD. If you consider it two TV movies, it’s a better deal.

The Old Dark House - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This horror film was originally released in 1932, which makes it Pre-Code. It is also a classic that established a lot of horror tropes that persist to this day. If you are a fan of horror films, then this is a must see. The extras on the DVD / Blu-ray include two audio commentary tracks and two interview featurettes, which is great for a film that’s over 80 years old. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Personal Shopper: Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This movie is good, bordering on great. Kristen Stewart is a really underrated actress. Extras are limited to an interview with the director and a press conference from a film festival. It is worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week, but not quite enough to win.

Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A documentary about the impact Native Americans had on the Rock’n’Roll industry. The reviews are great and fans of Rockumentaries will want to pick it up. However, while the vast majority of critics liked it, most didn’t love it, so it is not quite a Pick of the Week contender.

Spider-Man: Homecoming - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Combo Pack, or 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand (Movie Only) or Video on Demand (With Extras)
No other screener arrived last week, so I reviewed this film, which I bought myself. Is it worth picking up? Are there enough extras to lift it to Pick of the Week? Check out our review to find out.

They Call Me Bruce? - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
An indie hit from the 1980s that did really well in theaters, but only got a proper DVD release in 2009. There appear to be no extras on the Blu-ray, which is a bummer. I watched this film probably a dozen times when I was a kid and I’m tempted to buy it again to see if it is as good as I remember.

Teen Wolf: Season 6, Part 2 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
This TV show started out earning better than expected reviews, but they were still merely good and not great and by the end, there were only four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Also coming out this week is the Complete Collection.

Vera: Set 7 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A British police procedural, so long-time readers know what to expect. It has earned a lot of praise, even a few awards in its native U.K., but the price-per-minute is really high for TV on DVD. If you look at it as four TV-movies, it isn’t a bad deal, on the other hand.

The Walking Dead: Season 7 - Limited Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The show lost a third of its audience from the season 7 premiere to the season 7 finale, yet they are trying to sell a nearly $200 collector’s edition Blu-ray. Wow.

War for the Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is one of the best-reviewed blockbusters of the year. It was also the least-profitable of the most recent incarnation of the franchise. I’ve heard that this is both the end of the franchise and that they have plans for three more movies. Extras include an audio commentary track, over an hour of featurettes, deleted scenes, and more. It is definitely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week. Also coming out this week is a Trilogy Box Set; however, I would wait on that, just in case there’s another installment in the works.

The only Christmas release on this week’s list that is of any interest to me is Holiday Inn: 75th Anniversary Edition. It is a classic, but this is not the first time it has been release on Blu-ray.

Wings - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
There are a lot of horror films on this week’s list, which makes sense, as this is the last Tuesday before Halloween. That said, it is quantity over quality and almost not are worth picking up.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
War for the Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon:Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack
There’s only one 3D release this week, but it is for the biggest release of the week. If you have a 3D setup, then spending $3 more for the 3D Combo pack over the Blu-ray combo pack makes sense.

4K Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Emoji Movie - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
War for the Planet of the Apes - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Warrior - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Avoid The Emoji Movie, if you can. The Planet of the Apes films are worth owning, but not worth spending extra for 4K.

TV on DVD Megasets - Buy from Amazon:
The Jesse Stone 9-Movie Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Red Skelton Hour In Color: The Crown Prince of Comedy - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Teen Wolf - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Red Skelton Hour isn’t technically a complete series, but it is likely as close as we will get.

The Glass Castle - Reviews - Video on Demand
Ingrid Goes West - Reviews - Video on Demand
Long Way Back: The The Story of Todd Z Man Zalkins - No Reviews - Video on Demand
There are a few VOD releases on this list that are worth checking out. Atomic Blonde, Cars 3, Ingrid Goes West, etc. On the other hand, they might be worth picking up on Blu-ray instead.
