Wonderstruck

It was a good weekend with three films earning more than $10,000 on the theater chart, led by The Killing of a Sacred Deer, with an average of $28,780 in four theaters. Its Tomatometer Score is merely good, but its average is even better at 8 out of 10. An average score of 8 out of 10 is close to award-worthy. Meanwhile, Jane did even better with an average of $19,449 in three theaters, which is amazing for a documentary. Its reviews remain 100% positive and the average critic simply loves the movie and it could be an Oscar winner. Wonderstruck rounded out the $10,000 club with an average of $16,471 in four theaters. Its reviews are merely good, so its might have trouble growing. That said, it is more accessible and mainstream than most other limited releases, so that could help.

There were only a couple of other new limited releases that did well and a few that bombed completely. Tragedy Girls earned an average of $6,063 in two theaters, while its reviews suggest good word-of-mouth and potentially long legs. Aida’s Secrets did well with $5,665 in its lone theater. Dealt and 120 Beats Per Minute were neck-and-neck with $4,293 and $4,283 respectively. Golmaal Again was the biggest limited release of the week earning over $1 million in 267 theaters for an average of $3,797. Maigret Sets a Trap earned $2,556 in one theater.

There were also four films that missed the Mendoza Line. The Paris Opera almost avoided this fate with an average of $1,927 in four theaters. Heal was close behind with an average of $1,810 in seven theaters. RV: Resurrected Victims bombed with an average of $963 in 11 theaters. Finally, we get to Kills on Wheels, with $380 over the weekend.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Golmaal Again opened with more than $1 million, so it obviously hit that milestone during its opening weekend.
  • Loving Vincent reached $1 million early in the weekend and it should have no issue getting to $2 million before long.
  • The Florida Project hit $1 million over the weekend and it still has room to grow.
