New at The Numbers: Genre Stars and Keyword Connections

November 18, 2017

Moonrise Kingdom

Here at The Numbers, we strive to improve your reading experience by adding more features we believe you will find interesting. Today, we have two new features to talk about. Firstly, we have a series of new acting records for the various categorizations we use. For example, the highest grossing leading actors in films based on a TV show. The number one actor is Shia LaBeouf, who starred in the first three Transformers movies. Number two is Tom Cruise, who is the star of the Mission: Impossible franchise, while number five is Justin Long, who provided the voice for the titular character in the Alvin and the Chipmunks films. Starting to notice a pattern? Nearly everyone on the top of this list is someone who starred in one TV adaptation that turned into a lucrative franchise. The only exception is Simon Pegg, who has been in two of these franchises: Mission: Impossible and Star Trek trilogy.

Some of these lists give us insight into a genre, like the highest grossing stars in romantic comedies. There’s only one man in the top seven, Richard Gere, and he’s there almost entirely due to the two films he made with Julia Roberts. It seems the leading men are more replaceable, while it is the leading lady who is the real draw. Other lists are less diverse, due to the limited number of films in the sample size. The highest grossing stars stop-motion animations stars are led by Julia Sawalha from Chicken Run. Likewise, Gina Gershon leads the NC-17 list because of her performance in Showgirls. Meanwhile, the entire list for multiple production methods are actors from Movie 43.

There are of course much bigger lists, including biggest stars for Warner Bros. and Disney. Then you can start looking at the international and worldwide lists as well. There’s a lot to explore.

The other new feature is an added feature to our keywords section. If we pick a keyword at random, Cannibalism, we see after the list of movies, there is a list of other keywords that are commonly associated with the original keyword. Before, if you clicked an entry in that list, say Dysfunctional Family, it would take you to that list. Now, it shows you the list of films that are in both keywords. You can then continue this process by filtering for death of a parent, although, at this point we’ve run keywords to pick, as none of the remaining films share another keyword in common.

If you start with a much bigger keyword than Cannibalism, you can get some strange lists, like Romance, Voiceover / Narration, Non-Chronological, Dysfunctional Family, Prologue, and Intertitle. ... I’m not surprised a film like Moonrise Kingdom is on that list.

We’re working on a lot more, so look for more announcements soon.
