Theater Averages: Justice League tops Chart with $23,165, Three Billboards Grabs Second

November 21, 2017

Justice League

Justice League topped the theater average chart with $23,165 in just over 4,000 theaters. This is in the top ten best theater averages for any wide release that has come out this year, but it is about 25% lower than it needed to be. Last week’s winner, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was pushed into second place with an average of $20,796 in 53 theaters. Its strong hold plus its early success during Awards Season should help it stick around in theaters for a long time. Roman J. Israel, Esq was next with an average of $15,500 in four theaters. This would be a good start for a limited release, but it is scheduled to expand wide on Wednesday, so I’m not sure it is good enough. Finally, Lady Bird rounded out the $10,000 club with an average of $10,573 in 238 theaters. It has already earned a significant measure of mainstream success and it still has room to grow.

There were only a handful of other new limited releases, and only a couple did well. The Breadwinner earned an average of $5,798 in three theaters. That’s good for an animated film. Sweet Virginia earned $5,183 in its lone theater, which is great for a film also playing on VOD. Song of Granite struggled with $3,500 in one theater over the weekend for a five-day opening of $4,634. Rebels on Pointe missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,635 over the weekend, but it earned an average of $2,405 over its five-day weekend.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Jane reached $1 million over the weekend. It very likely won’t get to $2 million, but this is still a fantastic result for a documentary.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri earned more than $1 million over the weekend, getting to the first milestone in the process. It will have no trouble getting to many more milestones before it is done.
  • The Florida Project got to $4 million before the weekend, but it might not get to $5 million.
  • Loving Vincent hit $4 million before the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $5 million.
  • Lady Bird reached $2 million before the weekend and $3 million and $4 million over the weekend. It might be close to $10 million by this time next week.
  • Let There Be Light hit $6 million early last week and it could finish with over $7.5 million.
