International Box Office: Black Panther Final Earns Top Spot With $100.0 million

Black Panther

For the first time, Black Panther earned first place on the international chart, adding $100.0 million in 57 markets to its totals, which now sit at $516,600,000 internationally and $1.078 billion worldwide. It became just the 33rd film to reach $1 billion worldwide and by Tuesday was in the top 20 of all time. Additionally, it is now in fifth place in the MCU and will be in a close fight for third place by the end of the weekend. I’m more bullish that I was last weekend, because the film was a hit in China earning $65.07 million. This is about on par with Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: Homecoming, meaning the film is on pace to hit $1.3 billion worldwide

Operation Red Sea slipped to second place with $24 million in six markets for a total of $530 million internationally. Almost all of this came from the film’s native market, China, where it earned $23.54 million over the weekend for a total of $527.80 million in that market.

Red Sparrow rose to third place with $15.7 million in 69 markets for totals of $51.8 million internationally and $83.3 million. This is more than it cost to make, but it would need nearly double this figure to break even in the short term. There is some good news, as the film did have strong holds in several major markets, including Germany, where it dipped just 12% to $2.1 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $5.1 million. If the film has good legs internationally, enough to get to $100 million, while earning just over $50 million domestically, then the film should break even sometime during its home market run.

Tomb Raider started its international run a week early earning fourth place with $14.2 million on 3,405 screens in 9 markets. Both South Korea and Indonesia could argue they were the film’s biggest market. The film earned $2.55 million on 806 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total opening of $2.99 million. It had to settle for second place in that market. On the other hand, the film topped the chart in Indonesia with $2.5 million on 646 screens. There are not enough markets to make a really informed prediction about the film’s box office chances here, but opening in the low and mid $20 million range seems likely.

The Shape of Water earned a spot in the top five for the first time with $11.3 million in 52 markets for totals of $87.4 million internationally and $148.3 million worldwide. The film is obviously benefiting from its Oscar wins and should have no trouble getting to $100 million internationally. Unless the film cost two or three times more to advertising than it did to make, it has already broken even.
