January 10, 2007: Article updated with revised gross for Babel

Since New Years Eve fell on a Sunday this year, there was precious little in terms of international box office numbers released this week. We have some studio estimates, some box office information for major markets, and some updated totals. But for the most, there's little to share.

  • Deja Vu turned in career best opening for Denzel Washington in both Germany, ($3.3 million on 500 screens), and Austria, ($403,000 on 80). It also nearly doubled its weekend take in Italy with $1.4 million on 299 screens for a three-week total of $6.6 million. Overall it added $9.5 million for a total of $49.4 million.
  • Flushed Away fell to $5.3 million over the weekend and now sits at $85.77 million internationally.
  • The Departed added $3 million on 1,900 screens in 40 markets for an international total of $116.4 million. It is now the undisputed biggest hit in Martin Scorsese's career. All it needs to do now is win him the Best Director Oscar and it will be perfect.
  • Charlotte's Web bombed in its debut in Mexico taking fifth place with $342,000 on 333 screens over the weekend and $523,000 in total. This is even more disappointing considering how well family friendly films usually perform there. Overall the film made $1.7 million on 1,200 screens in 10 markets for a still early total of $12.42 million at week's end.
  • The Prestige added $1.5 million on 420 screens in 15 markets for a total of $30.5 million internationally.
  • Babel also managed $1.5 million over the weekend for a total of $30.65 million.
  • Letters From Iwo Jima is still doing well in Japan earning $1.4 million on 322 screens for a total of $22 million in the market. To put this into perspective, Flags of Our Fathers has earned $24 million internationally so far.

Updated international totals were also released for a handful of films:
