International Details - Slim Pickings

January 15, 2007

Apocalypto was the best of the rest this weekend pulling in $8.3 million over the weekend for a running tally of $20 million on the international scene. Its biggest single market was the U.K. where the film opened in third place with $2.62 million on 385 screens, (including very limited previews), which was a record for a foreign language film. It did even better in Italy with $3.17 million on 316 screens placing second. Given the film's R-rating, it should outperform its domestic total giving it a target box office of over $100 million worldwide.

  • Deja Vu added $8.1 million on 3.048 screens in 30 markets for a total of $68.7 million internationally. Much of this came from Germany, ($2.35 million on 601 screens), and Italy, ($1.13 million on 241 screens) and the film noew has $7.02 million and $8.68 million in those two markets respectively. Next up for the film is South Korea this weekend, Australia the next while it doesn't open in Japan till the end of March.
  • Flushed Away grew by 11% in Italy adding $1.28 million on 281 screens to its total of $6.99 million in that market. Overall the film earned $7.2 million on 4,041 screens in 56 markets for a total of $92.2 million internationally.
  • Charlotte's Web doubled its take this weekend to $3.4 million on 1,881 screens in 16 markets for an early international total of $15.2 million. The film continues to struggle in most markets with just $1.04 million on 401 screens in Germany, missing the top five in the process, and it was no better in Brazil with just $221,000 on 94 screens. The film did have strong holds in Mexico as it grew by 2% to $344,000 on 333 screens for the weekend and $1.29 million in total, however, had the film opened with $1.29 million on 333 screens, it would have been mildly disappointing.
  • The Blood Diamond started its international run with a better than expected with $3.4 million on 514 screens in half-a-dozen markets. These include Australia where it claimed fifth place with $1.50 million on just 188 screens, which was the smallest theatre count in the top five. The film earned first place in Singapore with $332,000 on 30 screens, second place in Taiwan with $556,000 on 76, and third in Brazil with $622,000 on 100.
  • Employee of the Month had a surprisingly strong start in the U.K. scoring second place with $3.37 million on 321 screens.
  • The Prestige earned an additional $2.8 million on 4,490 screens in 26 markets putting its at $35.6 million internationally.
  • The Departed is just wrapping up its run adding $2.2 million on 2600 screens in 34 markets for a total of $119.7 million.
  • Letters From Iwo Jima is still number one in Japan, in fact, it grew by 48% to $2.12 million on 322 screens and has now made $29.99 million in that market alone. This is more than its sister film, Flags of Our Fathers, has earned internationally after opening in more than 50 markets.
  • Open Season opened in South Korea with $1 million on 180 screens lifting its international total to $99 million.
  • Babel grew by 24% during its second weekend in Spain with $1.59 million on 197 screens. That gives the film $4.36 million in the market and $12.4 million internationally.
  • White Noise 2: The Light opened in the U.K. ahead of its domestic debut earnign seventh place with $1.35 million on 308 screens. This is about 70% less than what the original made during its debut in that market back in 2005.
  • A Good Year had a bad start in France with just $721,000 on 290 screens. So far the film has made $22.8 million internationally, which more than triple its domestic take, but is still a terrible result.
  • Rocky Balboa started its international run with a third place finish in Denmark with $259,000 opening on 22 screens over the weekend and $272,000 in total. That represented the best per screen average in the market.
