IMAX - Potter Profits on Big Big Screen

There were even more records falling this weekend as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix broke several IMAX records during its opening. This includes the largest number of screens (91 domestically and 35 internationally); biggest Wednesday ($1.9 million); the largest 5-day domestic total ($7.4 million); largest domestic per screen average ($80,500); and the largest worldwide opening ($9.4 million). And because of massive pre-sales and sold out showings, the film should show stronger legs on IMAX screens that it will as a whole.
This result comes shortly after Spider-Man 3 broke many of the same IMAX records during its opening and went on to reach $20 million faster than any other 2D digitally re-mastered IMAX release.
Order of the Phoenix looks to break that record and become the third such film to cross $20 million at the box office this year.
(300 being the first.)
Next up for IMAX is Beowulf, which debuts on November 16.
While it is unlikely to reach this level, it should still be profitable to theater owners and the studio.
