DVD Charts - Number One for 23

August 5, 2007

There was a close race on the DVD Sales Chart this week, with The Number 23 topping Zodiac 387,000 units to 352,000 units sold. Premonition fell to third place with 190,000 units sold and 791,000 in total. The Hills Have Eyes 2 placed third with 134,000 units sold for the week and 536,000 in total. Rounding out the top five was Shooter with 109,000 units sold for the week and 1.90 million after a month of release.

Other new releases to chart, and there were plenty of them, were led by Stargate SG-1 - The Complete Tenth Season with 89,000 units sold for a 6th place finish. Another TV on DVD release, Weeds - The Complete Second Season opened in 8th place with 64,000 units sold. The Contract was just behind with 63,000 units while The Bourne Files was in 10th place with 59,000. Slow Burn finished in 15th place with 37,000 while Monster Squad - 2-Disc 20th Anniversary Edition placed 19th with 34,000 units sold. Finally, Perfume - The Story of a Murderer opened in 24th place with just under 30,000 units sold.

There were some other interesting tidbits this week, including many recent releases, and some not so recent ones. For instance, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire sold just under 30,000 units this week. Night at the Museum has also done amazing well on the sales chart with 6.99 million sales, while Bridge to Terabithia has done relatively strong business with 1.78 million in sales and should cross the 2 million mark before it drops out of the top 30. Harry Potter isn't the only franchise with releases in the top 30 as The Bourne Identity pulled in 32,000 in sales while The Bourne Supremacy pulled in 58,000 in sales and with The Bourne Files, the franchise sold 149,000 units, which would have placed it fourth on this week's chart.

On the rental side, The Number 23 was the first of a large batch of new releases that dominated the charts. It finished first in a close race with fellow new release, Zodiac, $6.94 million to $6.69 million. Despite a very strong hold Premonition fell to third place with $6.34 million; that was down 13% from its opening week and pushed its two-week total to $13.63 million. The Hills Have Eyes 2 also fell just 13% adding $4.07 million to its total of $8.74 million after two weeks. Its rare for direct-to-DVD release to finish in the top five, but that's just what The Contract managed to do by earning $3.98 million during its first week of release.

There were four other new releases to chart this week, all of which were limited releases theatrically. This group was led by Slow Burn, which placed 7th with $3.01 million during its first week of release, which was more than twice what it earned theatrically. The same can be said for 9th place Perfume - The Story of a Murderer and the $2.40 million it picked up. On the other hand, The Host failed to match its theatrical run coming in 13th place with $1.76 million, but that's still a good start for a limited release. Finally, The Nomad opened in 26th place with $850,000, which was more than 10 times what it made theatrically.
