Blueberries Take Flight on the Per Theater Chart

April 8, 2008

Flight of the Red Balloon rose to the top of the Per Theater Chart this week scoring an average or $17,611 in its two theaters. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was My Blueberry Nights with an average of $12,358 in six theaters.

There were only a handful of other new releases over the weekend and none came really close to $10,000. Jellyfish pulled in just over $25,000 in four theaters for an average of $6,338. Shine a Light also did respectable business with an average of $5,392, which is made more impressive thanks to its nearly 300 theater count. Water Lilies opened with $7,400 in two theaters for an average of $3,709, which is understandable for a niche market of a niche market film. Sex and Death 101 opened with an estimated $15,000 in five theaters giving it an average of $3000. Tuya's Marriage and La Forza del Destino were neck and neck with averages of $2,619 and $2,480 respectively. Finally, very few were able to Meet Bill as the movie earned just $35,000 in 36 theaters for an average of $978.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Charts alumni:

  • Married Life reached $1 million, barely, after a month of release. It will likely shed theaters too fast to reach $2 million.
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day hit $10 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go. Granted, it went very far for a limited release.
  • The only other film to reach a milestone this weekend was There Will Be Blood, which ticked over $40 million last Monday.
