International Details - Sex on the Decline

June 22, 2008

Sex and the City was knocked out of top spot with $23.71 million on 5591 screens in 44 markets for a total of $136.00 million after three weeks of release. Its biggest opening came from the Netherlands, which is a midlevel market at best, but it earned $810,000 on 108 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total. This is a very strong opening and the film will have little trouble topping Iron Man in the market and will even come relatively close to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull's total. Additionally, the film earned $4.29 million on 452 screens during its second weekend in Australia for a total of $14.88 million while in the U.K. it pulled in $3.50 million on 470 screens over the weekend lifting its total of $39.80 million after three.

  • Tracking for Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull continues to grow and $700 million worldwide is no longer the top end of projections, but a little on the low end. This week the film earned fourth place with $21.89 million on 6956 screens in 56 markets for a total of $359.46 million internationally and $635.98 million worldwide, which is 35th all-time. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is still at seven digits in a number of major markets including the U.K. where it added $3.45 million on 503 screens over the weekend and now has $69.70 million in total. France was well back with a still impressive $2.85 million on 786 screens over the weekend and $34.23 million after four. Germany added $2.11 million on 780 screens over the weekend to its total of $24.59 million, while Spain brought in $1.66 million on 627 screens for a total of $26.83 million. The final million-dollar market was Australia with $1.38 million on 378 screens over the weekend and $24.30 million in total. Next up is Japan, which is the film's final major market.
  • Kung Fu Panda landed in fifth place with $15.39 million on 1633 screens in 15 markets for a very early total of $42.66 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, however, half of its weekend haul came from two major markets: South Korea and Russia. In the former it made $5.65 million on 633 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.14 million, while in the latter it made $3.24 million on 821 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.14 million. Kung Fu Panda opens in China and Mexico this weekend, while it has major market debuts practically every weekend from now till the end of July. And it doesn't wrap up its run till September.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian added $11.11 million on 3624 screens in 29 markets for a total of $123.41 million after a month of release. The film had the biggest opening of the year in Argentina earning $1.46 million on 103 screens, while it grew 22% in China earning $4.77 million over the weekend for a total of $8.68 million after two. It was not as strong in Australia down close to 50% with $2.12 million on 415 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.23 million after two. Next up for the film is France and the U.K. at the end of June while it debuts in Spain at the beginning of July.
  • Dasavatharam was the first of two new Indian films to chart this week as it pulled in $4.63 million on 1211 screens in 11 markets during its opening weekend. This is a good opening, but not great.
  • Whap Happens in Vegas... fell nearly 50% to $3.84 million on 2425 screens in 26 markets for a total of $116.47 million. This is already above expectations by a sizable margin, and it is aiming for $200 million worldwide after it debut in Japan at the end of the month.
  • The Magic Hour was down 27% in Japan earning $3.50 million on 379 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.82 million overall. This was enough for first in its native market and ninth overall.
  • Made of Honour climbed a spot to 10th with $3.04 million on 1481 screens in 30 markets for a total of $39.27 million. This weekend the film debuted in second place in Italy with $1.11 million on 293 screens over the weekend and $1.23 million in total, which is not particularly strong, but average for the film's run so far.
  • Sarkar Raj fell to 11th place with $3.03 million on 1279 screens in 17 markets for a total of $12.41 million after two weeks of release. It was weak in its native India and weaker elsewhere and it is not likely that the movie will show a profit anytime soon.
  • 21 is coasting on holdovers at the moment earning $2.53 million on 1281 screens in 43 markets for a total of $63.56 million. Its only million-dollar market was France where it added $1.20 million on 294 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.57 million after two.
  • Mere Baap Pahle Aap was merely average with $2.14 million on 882 screens in 2 markets over the weekend, which is low for an Indian film. If it can hold on well, it could show a small profit, but that is likely as good as it gets.
  • Superhero Movie fell to 14th place with $1.99 million on 1042 screens in 11 markets for a total of $29.44 million. Just over half of that came from the U.K. where it placed fifth with $1.01 million on 393 screens over the weekend and now has $3.30 million in total in that market.
  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall returned to the charts in 15th place thanks to an opening in Germany. There it pulled in $1.31 million on 349 screens, which was good enough for fourth place. Meanwhile, overall it managed $1.93 million on 551 screens in 10 markets for a total of $26.82 million.
  • Iron Man just missed $250 million internationally and now sits at $249.15 million overseas. Of that number, 1.61 million was earned over the weekend on 2532 screens in 50 markets.
  • Sagan opened in fourth place in France and 17th overall with $1.45 million on 247 screens.
  • You Don't Mess With The Zohan fell to 18th place with $1.34 million on 455 screens in 4 markets for a total of $4.59 million.
  • Speed Racer remained on the chart for one more week with $1.18 million on 1068 screens in 23 markets for a total of $38.37 million. Of that, the film earned $931,000 on 211 screens in Australia, which was only enough for sixth place.
