International Details - Panda Throws Its Weight Around

July 20, 2008

Kung Fu Panda grew to its biggest yet pulling in $45.32 million on 6314 screens in 49 markets for a total of $221.64 million. This includes openings in France where it placed second with $8.64 million on 743 screens for the full week and in Spain where it topped the charts with $6.29 million on 581 screens. The film's best holdover was The U.K. where it slipped a spot to third with $5.55 million on 456 screens for a two-week total of $21.57 million. It also held well in Germany adding $4.54 million on 838 screens for a two-week total of $11.14 million while it now has $20.38 million in Australia, including $3.17 million on 361 screens during this past weekend. Meanwhile, the film has yet to open in Italy or Japan, as well as a few other smaller markets, and should have no trouble reaching $300 million before long.

  • Mamma Mia! opened in first place in the U.K. with $10.32 million on 496 screens including last week's single theater run. It also opened in first place in Australia with $5.26 million on 397 screens, which was also enough for first place. Adding in several smaller markets and its holdover in Greece and the film made $24.50 million on 1407 screens in 12 markets for a total of $26.96 million.
  • Red Cliff opened in its native China, among five other markets, with $23.84 million on 2063 screens for a total of $25.69 million. This includes roughly $14.6 million in China while it made $4.28 million on 540 screens over the weekend in South Korea for a total of $5.08 million. This start is good news as the film is the most expensive China film ever costing more than half a billion Chinese Yuan, or just over $80 million American. It will need to show legs in these markets, and the ability to expand outside of the region, to be really profitable, but at least it is off to a good start.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian crossed the $200 million market since last week, but fell more than 50% this past weekend. It did add $11.46 million on 5170 screens in 43 markets for a total of $216.79 million. Its best market of the weekend was Spain where it earned $2.35 million on 625 screens over the weekend for a total of $10.57 million after two.
  • Wanted is not showing strong legs internationally as it fell nearly 50% to $9.44 million on 2330 screens in 28 markets for a total of $80.42 million. This includes openings in a few smaller markets, which does explain its sharp drop-off somewhat, and it has yet to open in most major markets, which bodes well for its future.
  • WALL-E slipped to seventh place with $7.46 million on 2008 screens in 15 markets for a total of $33.67 million. The film had no significant opening this past weekend, but opens in the U.K. next weekend, and should open big.
  • Get Smart remained in eighth place with a respectable $6.37 million on 2066 screens in 29 markets for a total of $45.72 million. Its only significant opening of the week came in Italy where it placed second with $838,000 on 316 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.06 million. Next up for the film is Germany, Spain, and Russia this weekend, while it doesn't end its run till October when it reaches Japan.
  • Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull added $5.98 million on 2332 screens in 47 markets to its total of $441.47 million internationally and $751.96 million worldwide. It became only the 27th film to reach $750 million worldwide, and it has likely already surpassed The Da Vinci Code. However, without additional markets left to open in, it won't climb much further than that.
  • Boys Over Flowers continues to rule Japan earning $5.45 million on 400 screens over the weekend for a total of $35.59 million after three.
  • Sex and the City fell out of the top ten, but with $5.39 million on 3148 screens in 51 markets and a total of $225.39 million, it has already made more than most thought it would.
  • All three of last weekend's wide releases opened internationally this past weekend as well. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army opened in the fewest number of markets and on the least number of screens, but still did the best earning 12th place with $4.73 million on 585 screens in 4 markets. This includes Mexico, which is Guillermo Del Toro place of birth; there the film made $2.16 million on 393 screens, which was more than the original made in total in the market, but it still had to settle for third place. The film was in first place during its launch in Thailand with $897,000 on 45 screens and in Malaysia with $827,000 on 61 while it was very strong in Singapore with $770,000 on 29 screens.
  • Journey To The Centre of the Earth opened in 13th place with $3.92 million on 637 screens in 5 market, which is respectable but nothing more. That is also the best way to describe its fourth place, $1.86 million opening in the U.K., its biggest market.
  • Meanwhile, Meet Dave opened in 14th place with just $3.36 million on 943 screens in 18 markets. These include a number of smaller markets, but also Russia and Australia. In the latter it earned an estimated $1.5 million while in the former it pulled in $874,000 on 188 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.05 million.
  • The Incredible Hulk reached $100 million and now has $101.32 million in total, including $3.35 million on 2561 screens in 51 markets this past weekend. It is not finished its run yet and it is aiming for $250 million worldwide. However, its disappointing opening in Germany ($1.17 million on 416 screens for a per screen average of just $2,808) does make that goal a little trickier.
  • Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na held on very well down just 30% to $2.43 million on 519 screens in 15 markets for a total of $9.11 million. This make it a good size hit for an Indian film, but not a blockbuster.
  • Kitaro and the Millennium Curse opened in third place in Japan and 17th place internationally with $2.18 million on 313 screens.
  • Public Enemy Returns has now made $25.87 million in its native South Korea, including $1.93 million on 327 screens this past weekend.
  • The Happening had the worst week-to-week performance on the charts down 56% to $1.92 million on 1739 screens in 20 markets for a total of $83.00 million.
  • The Forbidden Kingdom returned to the charts in 20th place with $1.36 million on 369 screens in 6 markets for a total of $55.23 million. It opened in the U.K. last week, but struggled with $1.64 million, including previews, and only managed fifth place.
  • The Magic Hour added $1.30 million on 321 screens over the weekend for a total of $30.92 million. This was enough for fourth place in Japan and 21st internationally.
  • Fellow Japanese film, The Climbers High, was just behind it with $1.18 million on 285 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.56 million after two.
  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall added $1.17 million on 800 screens in 16 markets to its total of $35.88 million and is now just a hair below $100 million worldwide.
  • Mes Amis, Mes Amours fell to 24th place with $1.17 million on 365 screens in three markets for a total of $3.85 million, almost all of which came from France.
  • Love Story 2050 fell less than 40% to $1.07 million on 654 screens in 17 markets for a total of $4.43 million. This is not as bad as it could have been, but the Indian film is far from a hit.
  • The Love Guru made its international debut in Australia with $1.04 million on 182 screens. This was enough for fifth in the market and 26th internationally. Compared to its domestic opening, it was a little weaker, but this is common for Mike Myers' movies.
  • Mehbooba was the third Indian film to chart last week, however, with just $1.03 million on 423 screens in 14 markets, it won't be remembered for long.
  • The final $1 million movie was Seuls Two, which earned $1.00 million on 502 screens in 3 markets for a total of $8.66 million after three weeks of release. Almost all of that came from its native France.
