International Details - Milestone Weekend

August 3, 2008

Hancock fell 56% to $20.22 million on 7516 screens in 70 markets, however, that was still enough for second place on the international chart this week, and lifted its totals to $295.58 million internationally and $502.06 million worldwide, reaching a major milestone. The film's best market of the week was Spain where it remained in first place with $3.98 million on 575 screens for a total of $16.86 million. It is also performing well in Germany where it held on to second place with $1.70 million on 755 screens over the weekend and $33.62 million after four. However, it is starting to slip in the U.K. falling to fifth place with $1.40 million on 400 screens, but its total of $45.15 million in that market is still fantastic. Hancock likely hit $300 million early last week, and it has yet to open in Japan and Italy.

  • It was also a milestone weekend for Mamma Mia!, as the movie reached $100 million over the weekend, this despite no major opening. It did pull in $16.13 million on 2274 screens in 21 markets for a total of $110.31 million. Of that, $5.62 million came from 476 screens during the film's third weekend in the U.K. while it has $46.14 million in total there. However, while it slipped to second place in that market, it remained in first place in Germany with $2.89 million on 612 screens and now has $11.25 million in total. Next up for the film is Spain next weekend, while it has major openings through till October.
  • Kung Fu Panda also reached a milestone this past weekend topping $300 million internationally. It earned $15.57 million on 6484 screens in 50 markets for a total of $303.29 million. The film opened in Japan but bombed earning just $2.08 million on 521 screens, which puts its per screen average below the $5000 mark that usually separates the hits from the misses. One has to think the studio was hoping for at least twice that, if not closer to $10 million.
  • WALL-E remained in the top five with $9.08 million on 2516 screens in 21 markets for a total of $70.23 million. Overall the film was down just 34% despite no major openings. Its best market of the weekend was the U.K. where it added $4.07 million on 505 screens for a two week total of $17.74 million, but this is not as strong as it was domestically, given the relative size of the two markets.
  • The X-Files: I Want to Believe started its international run in sixth place with $8.95 million on 2576 screens in 22 markets. This includes a trio of major markets: Australia, Germany, and Spain. It placed highest in Australia landing in third place with $921,000 on 212 screens while it had to settle for fourth in Spain with $1.18 million on 401 screens over the weekend and $1.36 million in total. It was one place lower still in Germany with $1.08 million on 587 screens. It's clear that the movie will make more internationally than domestically and thanks to a low production budget, it should still show a profit eventually.
  • Ponyo on the Cliff remained in first place in Japan and climbed into seventh internationally with $7.47 million on 481 screens over the weekend while it has $29.92 million after two weeks of release.
  • No major openings didn't prevent Wanted from reaching $100 million over the weekend. The film placed eighth internationally with $7.07 million on 1914 screens in 38 markets for a total of $106.37 million internationally and $235.00 million worldwide.
  • Journey To The Centre of the Earth climbed into the top ten with $6.90 million on 1911 screens in 14 markets for a total of $23.19 million. Journey earned second place during its first full weekend in Mexico with $2.65 million on 611 screens and now has $3.06 million in total in that market.
  • Red Cliff fell to 10th place with $6.79 million on 1378 screens in 8 markets for a total of $58.22 million.
  • The Good, the Bad and the Weird remained in first place in its native South Korea while it fell to 11th place internationally with $6.67 million on 720 screens for a total of $24.32 million in total.
  • Get Smart added $4.73 million on 2362 screens in 30 markets for a total of $63.43 million. Since the TV series wasn't as popular internationally so it is not surprising it is lagging behind its domestic run, however, it did well in Mexico placing third with $1.47 million on 347 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.90 million.
  • The Incredible Hulk opened in first place in France with $4.83 million on 679 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend the film made $4.42 million on 1541 screens in 39 markets for a total of $108.93 million internationally.
  • Sunny opened in second place in South Korea and 14th place internationally with $3.80 million on 518 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.19 million.
  • Hellboy 2: The Golden Army plummeted nearly 60% falling to 15th place with $3.44 million on 1267 screens in 9 markets for a total of $21.59 million. There were no new openings last weekend and there are no new openings this weekend, or next weekend, however, it is already nearing the original's worldwide total and should show major growth when all is said and done.
  • Pokemon 2008 fell nearly 50% during its second weekend in Japan, which is high for the market, but given the high Fanboy Effect, it is not surprising. Over the weekend it earned $3.34 million on 359 screens for a total of $17.11 million after just two weeks of release.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian again fell 46% adding $3.33 million on 3005 screens in 37 markets for a total of $237.32 million.
  • The Happening returned to the charts with $2.81 million on 773 screens in 19 markets for a total of $88.35 million. Almost all of that came from $2.60 million on 310 screens in Japan, but even with the long legs in that market, $100 million internationally is a long shot.
  • Meet Dave continues to struggle internationally down to $2.56 million on 1581 screens in 25 markets for a total of $12.44 million. The film did opened in third place in Mexico with $994,000 on 549 screens, which is not bad, or at least not as bad as it could have been.
  • Kismat Konnection fell 60% but still earned a solid $2.27 million on 722 screens in 17 markets for a total of $9.05 million, which is strong for an Indian film.
  • Boys Over Flowers fell to fourth place in Japan and 21st internationally with $2.21 million on 400 screens over the weekend while it has made $50.49 million after a month.
  • The Forbidden Kingdom returned to the charts with $2.21 million on 442 screens in 5 markets for a total of $58.80 million in total. In Australia the film managed fifth place with $801,000 on 159 screens while it earned sixth place with $1.37 million on 198 screens in Japan.
  • Indiana Jones And The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull fell to 23rd place to $2.13 million on 1238 screens in 34 markets for a total of $455.32 million internationally and $768.97 million worldwide.
  • A British film called Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging... I don't care what that movie is about, I need to have it on DVD. ... Moving on, Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging opened in the U.K. with $1.85 million on 272 screens, which was enough for fourth place locally and 24th internationally.
  • Sex and the City fell $1.81 million on 1367 screens in 42 markets for a total of $236.12 million with Japan left to go.
  • Mission Istaanbul opened in 26th place with $1.73 million on 598 screens in 15 markets, which is weak for an Indian film.
  • Superhero Movie returned to the chart with $1.63 million on 434 screens in 6 markets for a total of $35.47 million. The majority of that came from Germany where it placed third with $1.36 million on 354 screens.
  • Money Hai Toh Honey Hai opened in 28th place with $1.36 million on 643 screens in 17 markets, which is just as bad as the previous Indian film on this week's chart.
  • The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life opened in sixth place in France and 29th overall with $1.34 million on 261 screens.
  • The final film to top $1 million was Nim's Island with $1.21 million on 1136 screens in 8 markets for a total of $36.83 million.
