DVD Sales - Island Paradise

August 19, 2008

New releases were rather weak, as they have been nearly every week this summer. But we did have a new number one film on this week's sales chart in Nim's Island, as it managed $8.74 million from 466,000 units sold. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay slipped to second place with 207,000 units over the week for sales of 613,000 units / $14.26 million after two weeks. Never Back Down climbed a spot to third with 155,000 and has sold 427,000 units in two weeks for total sales of $8.83 million. 21moved in the other direction, as it fell to fourth place with 150,000 units / $2.68 million in sales for the week for totals of 1.06 million / $19.83 million after three. Starship Troopers 3 - Marauders opened in fifth, selling 116,000 units while generating $1.99 million in revenue, which is good for a direct-to-DVD release.

There were only two other new releases to chart this week with the Starship Troopers - 3-pack selling 57,000 units and placing tenth. However, thanks to a high price-tag, the releases placed fourth with revenue of $2.94 million. The final new release to chart this week was Get Smart - Season One, which placed 19th with 39,000 units sold and $665,000 in revenue.

It was a bad week for Blu-ray sales as the number one release was a kids movie, but even this hardly explains the nearly 27% drop-off to just $6.9 million in sales. This was the weakest weekly sales number in three months.
