International Top Five - Knight Returns to Top

August 21, 2008

The Dark Knight reclaimed first place on the international chart with $42.4 million on 7700 screens in 61 markets for a total of $328.6 million internationally and just over $800 million worldwide, which puts it ahead of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for the year. This week it opened in first place in France and Spain $9.6 million on 818 screens in the former and $6.85 million on 570 screens in the latter. Meanwhile in South Korea the film was down just 23% earning $3.47 million on 463 screens for a total of $13.92 million after just two weeks. The film is also still in first place in the U.K. added $4.30 million on 499 screens for a total of $74.91 million, which is still a bit behind Mamma Mia!'s running tally of $84.34 million, and it is unlikely that it will catch it in the end in that market.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor slipped to second place with $32.6 million on 6,853 screens in 56 markets for a total of $196.1 million. This week the film opened in second place in Japan, but it made $6.97 million on 548 screens, which is roughly three times more than The Dark Knight opened with in the market last weekend. It is also doing amazing business in Germany with $2.80 million on 650 screens for a total of $10.99 million. The film is also doing well in the U.K. adding $2.67 million on 479 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.22 million. The film has likely already reached $200 million internationally, and with openings in Australia and Italy still to go, $300 million is within reach.

Mamma Mia! is continuing its amazing run in the U.K. adding $4.12 million on 523 screens for a total of $84.34 million. Overall the film made $17.96 million on 2,750 screens in 24 markets for a total of $206.76 million, including a launch in Spain. In that market the film made $2.60 million on 377 screens during its first weekend of full release, while it has made $4.97 million in total. With openings in Mexico, South Korea, France, Russia, Italy, and Japan yet to go, it should hit $300 million internationally with ease, and perhaps even $500 million worldwide.

WALL-E landed in fourth place with $13.8 million on 3,824 screens in 29 markets for a total of $146.2 million. This week the film opened in a number of smaller markets, but was among the best openings ever for a Disney film ever in many of them. The biggest opening came in Thailand where the movie earned $800,000 on 105 screens. The majority of the film's weekend haul came from holdovers, including France where it added $2.5m on 736 screens for a total of $17 million. It also earned $1.87 on 498 screens in south Korea for a total of $9.12 million while in the U.K. it made $1.46 million on 485 screens for a total of $35.76 million.

You Don't Mess With The Zohan climbed into the top five with $11.2 million on 1,475 screens in 24 markets for a total of $40.8 million. The film was able to capture first place in Germany with $5.08 million on 579 screens, which was the best opening ever for an Adam Sandler film in that market. On the other hand, it had to settle for third place in the U.K. with $2.84 million on 367 screens.
