International Details - Bolting to the Top

December 7, 2008

The top five on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Bolt started its run on the international charts in sixth place with $7.90 million on 1417 screens in 4 markets. This includes a second place, $4.30 million opening on 570 screens in Russia, while it Italy it also placed second with $2.19 million on 467 screens. Meanwhile in Poland, it topped the charts with $855,000 on 120 screens, but this is par for the course as films of this nature tend to do very well in Poland.

  • Australia opened in Australia, and a couple other markets, earning a total of $5.10 million on 654 screens in three markets during its first weekend of release. Of this total, $4.99 million was earned on 643 screens in native market, including previews, which was the best ever opening for a Baz Luhrmann film in his home. Next week the film opens in South Korea, while it has a major push on Christmas Day / Boxing Day.
  • Changeling climbed a spot to eighth with $4.53 million on 1093 screens in 5 markets for a total of $14.24 million. It opened in third place in the U.K. with $1.86 million on 351 screens, while it slipped to third place in France with $1.51 million on 421 screens for a three-week total of $6.94 million.
  • High School Musical 3: Senior Year added $3.63 million on 3627 screens in 32 markets for a total of $134.74 million. The film had no major openings this week, but it did open in first place in both Venezuela with $497,000 on 62 screens and in Argentina with $474,000 on 86. Its performance in Venezuela was not only enough for first place, it was a record opening for a musical.
  • Four Christmas started its international run in tenth place with $3.61 million on 460 screens in 2 markets. This was broken down into $3.45 million on 434 screens from a first place opening in the U.K., and $164,000 on 26 screens from a third place debut in Singapore.
  • Public Enemy Number One Part 2's weekend haul was 50% off its opening with $3.01 million on 528 screens in 3 markets for a total of $10.06 million. Of this total, $8.03 million has been earned in France, including $2.39 million on 500 screens this past weekend.
  • Max Payne fell out of the top ten with $2.65 million on 1632 screens in 15 markets for a total of $40.37 million. The film's only opening of note was Italy, but it struggled there with $779,000 on 226 screens, placing sixth in the process. That's it for major markets for a while, until mid-April when it opens in Japan.
  • Red Cliff has spent a month on top of the chart in Japan, this week earning $2.33 million on 548 screens. That lifts its totals to $39.27 million in the market and $108.61 million internationally.
  • I Want To Be A Shellfish slipped to 14th place internationally while it remained in second place in Japan with $2.05 million on 33 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.19 million after two.
  • Death Race returned to the charts in 15th place with $2.02 million on 1019 screens for a total of $33.82 million. It opened in a trio of major markets, with its best result coming in Japan where it placed fourth with $643,000 on 225 screens; however, its per screen average is below $5000, well below $5000, so it will likely collapse quickly in subsequent weeks. The film also opened in fourth place in Germany with $652,000 on just 199 screens, while it only managed 11th place in Italy with $209,000 on 100 screens. That's it for major markets, by the film should still have enough in its tank to top its domestic box office, while reaching profitability some time during its home market run.
  • Saw V opened in Japan but struggled landing in fifth place with $684,000 on 123 screens. Overall it fell to 16th place with $2.02 million on 1251 screens in 32 markets for a total of $39.91 million.
