Valentino is a Monster on the Per Theater Chart

March 31, 2009

Valentino: The Last Emperor remained on the top of the per theater chart with an average of $15,553 in two theaters. The overall number one film of the past weekend, Monsters vs. Aliens, opened in second place on the per theater chart with an average of $14,454 in more than 4,000 theaters. Ramin Bahrani finally had a box office hit, as Goodbye Solo earned nearly $40,000 in three theaters for an average of $12,681. Hopefully it will continue its strong run in the coming weeks. Sin Nombre was down less than 14% to $70,000 in 6 theaters for an average of $11,695. Meanwhile, American Swing rounded out the $10,000 club with $10,174.

The best of the rest of the new releases was Guest of Cindy Sherman, which opened with a very respectable $7,685 in one theater. Shall We Kiss? was right behind with an average of $7,170 in four theaters. The Country Teacher struggled with an average of $4,096 in two theaters. Three Monkeys opened with $3,045 in one theater, or $1,015 per monkey, while The Education of Charlie Banks was just behind with just over $8,000 in three theaters for an average of $2,846. America Betrayed opened with $2,450 in one theater, but at least it topped the Mendoza Line. The Cross was not so lucky as it opened with an average of $1,400, but with an opening theater count of 221, it would be hard to imagine it would have opened with too much more. On the other hand, the confusion over release dates could explain why Spinning Into Butter only managed an opening per theater average of $1,384.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Gomorrah made it to $1 million over the weekend, but that's as far as it will go.
  • On the other hand, Two Lovers reached $2 million since last week, and it has a shot at $3 million.
  • Sunshine Cleaning topped $1 million before the weekend and $2 million over the weekend. With further expansion this coming weekend, it should have little trouble reaching a few more milestones.
