International Top of the Chart - Angels Shine in Back-to-Back Wins

May 28, 2009

For the first time this summer, we didn't have a new number one film on the international chart, as Angels and Demons repeated as champion. It was able to do this after earning $58.43 million on 11,013 screens in 74 markets for a total of $196.72 million. This is more than it will make during its entire domestic run, but it is nearly 40% lower than its predecessor had earned at this point in its run. This is similar to the franchise's decline domestically, but it is hard to call that good news. "It's not doing any worse internationally than it is doing domestically." That's slim praise indeed.

This includes a first place, $4.17 million opening on 800 screens in Mexico, but nearly all of the rest of its weekend haul came from holdovers. The film was able to remain in top spot in several major markets led by Germany with $8.01 million on 803 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.95 million after two. In Spain it added $4.15 million on 669 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.97 million, while Japan was close behind with $3.94 million on 723 screens over the weekend, but already had $15.86 million in total. Strangely, the film plummeted in Italy down 58% to $3.22 million on 773 screens; however, weaker than expected competition helped it remain in first place, while lifting its total to $16.76 million.

The film was pushed into second place in the U.K., but still earned an impressive $3.88 million on 506 screens over the weekend for a total of $17.44 million. It added $4.09 million on 748 screens in France, but that was for the full week and it only has $10.75 million after two. In Australia it managed $2.66 million on 434 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.11 million. It has made $11.21 million in Russia, including $2.50 million on 685 screens this past weekend, but that represents a 64% decline.

Second place overall went to Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian with $49.04 million on 8114 screens in 93 markets. It had to play second banana to Angels and Demons in many major markets, but did score first place in the U.K. with $6.59 million on 515 screens. In Russia it pulled in $5.23 million on 883 screens while in Australia it earned $3.69 million on 397 screens. It also placed first in France earning $5.28 million on 697 screens, but that was for the full week.

The film had to settle for second place in Germany with $4.50 million on 723 screens, while it was also second in Spain with $2.82 million on 503 screens. Italy was not as kind with $1.81 million on 518 screens, but that was still enough for second place.

We will get to Star Trek and the rest of the multi-million dollar films on Sunday.
