International Top of the Chart - Finding Salvation on the International Chart

June 11, 2009

Terminator Salvation became the second potential monster hit of the summer that failed to make much of an impact domestically, but appears to be making up for that weakness at the international box office. This weekend it expanded into roughly 60 more markets, which allowed it to score first place overall with $67.49 million on 8,830 screens in 71 markets for a total of $98.62 million internationally and $204.19 million worldwide.

The film's largest opening came from the U.K. where it pulled in a massive $11.37 million on 489 screens; this was nearly three times its nearest competition. It was just as dominant in Russia with $7.94 million on 762 screens and in Australia with $5.14 million on 386. Things were a little closer in Germany, but it still won with ease by earning $5.78 million on 717 screens, while in Spain it debuted with $4.53 million on 563 screens. Brazil brought in $2.10 million on 470 screens, just ahead of its performance of $2.04 million on 480 screens in Italy. That Italian debut is the only one where I would say it disappointed, but even then it finished first.

(The film also finished first in France with an estimated $6.3 million on 752 screens; however, since France doesn't release its box office numbers until later than most, we don't know how dominant it was.)

As for holdovers, there was really only one significant holdover market, South Korea. After three weeks of release, the film has slipped to third place, but still managed an impressive $2.84 million on 579 screens over the weekend for a total of $19.64 million. The film is holding on better than most in that market, and has made almost as much as Angels and Demons, Night at the Museum - Battle for the Smithsonian, and Star Trek have made combined in that market.

We will get to those films, and the rest of the multi-million dollar movies, on Sunday.
