DVD Sales - Shopaholic Rings Up the Sales

July 7, 2009

It was a relatively slow week for new releases, but we still had a new number one DVD on top of the sales chart this week. That DVD was Confessions of a Shopaholic with 554,000 units and $9.51 million in consumer spending at retail. Madea Goes to Jail remained in second place, but was well back with 322,000 units for the week and sales of 1.40 million units after two. Gran Torino was right behind with 317,000 units for the week, but its totals are a lot higher at 4.37 million units and $67.44 million. Inkheart opened in fourth place with 239,000 units for $4.19 million in spending, which was just ahead of The Pink Panther 2, which opened in fifth place with 224,000 units and $4.04 million.

The best of the rest of the new releases was The Code, which placed ninth with 97,000 units / $1.45 million in opening week sales.

High Definition sales softened by more than 30% to $14.5 million over the week. This was still 112% more than the same week last year. Also, compared to DVD sales, Blu-ray represented 9.1% of total sales and 12% of the top 20 comparison. The top-selling Blu-ray of the week was... Transformers. No wonder overall sales were down. That release added about 64,000 units to its sales, while Gran Torino placed second for the week with 55,000 units. The best new release of the week was Inkheart at just under 40,000 units.
