International Top of the Chart - Ice Age Remains Hot

July 15, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs remained in top spot on the international chart with an astronomical $101.89 million on 12,057 screens in 102 markets over the weekend. After three weeks of release the film has made $322.69 million internationally and $442.27 million Worldwide.

The film's only new market of the weekend was China where it made $4.6 million on 338 screens, which was enough for second place behind Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. It only played on 338 screens, because the studio decided to limit its run to 3D screens as a way to avoid China's limits on international movies. This is actually becoming common practice for 3D films.

Holdovers were led by Germany, where the film remained in top spot with $14.88 million on 867 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.29 million after two. It also kept the pole position in Russia with $6.98 million on 1,098 screens over the weekend and $34.34 million after two. It remained in top spot in the two major Latin American markets; in Mexico it added $6.41 million on 970 screens over the weekend for a total of $22.35 million after two, and in Brazil it made $5.05 million on 752 screens over the weekend for a total of $20.05 million after two. In Spain it pulled in $4.45 million on 663 screens, which was enough for first place over the weekend and $17.18 million in total. On the other hand, the film was pushed into second place in the U.K., but earned $7.64 million on 522 screens to lift its total to $24.81 million after two weeks of release.

Up next is Japan at the end of the month, while it debuts in South Korea and Italy in August.

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen remained in a distant second place, but we will get to that release, and the rest of the multi-million dollar movies over the weekend.
