DVD Sales - Witch Wins Race

August 18, 2009

There were only five new releases to chart this week, but three of those reached the top five. This includes Race to Witch Mountain, which sold 763,000 units earning $13.35 million during its first week on the home market. Second place went to Obsessed with 541,000 units / $8.81 million. Fast and Furious fell to third place with 463,000 units / $8.16 million for the week and 2.19 million units / $36.06 million after two. Watchmen hasn't sold as many units with a running tally of 1.81 million including 231,000 units this past week, but its total sales have amounted to $37.41 million, which is just ahead of the previous film's two-week total. The Soloist opened in fifth place with 209,000 units / $3.55 million, which is weaker than I was expecting.

The best of the rest of the new releases was Flight of the Conchords - Season Two, which placed seventh with 109,000 units sold and $2.12 million in sales. The only other new release to chart was the Anniversary Edition of The Tigger Movie, which placed 26th with 47,000 units sold and $961,000 in sales for the week.

Blu-ray plummeted this week, but that was to be expected after two weeks of stellar sales. Total sales were down 47% from last week to $16.1 million, but that was still better than average for the year and 208% higher than the same week last year. Compared to DVD sales, Blu-ray represented 8.9% of total sales and 11.3% of the top 20 comparison. The best selling Blu-ray of the week was Fast and Furious adding an estimated 110,000 units to its running tally of 500,000 units. While Race to Witch Mountain was in second place with more than 100,000 units, which is a great start for a kids movie.
