DVD Sales - Consumers Love Seventeen

August 26, 2009

New releases were able to take the top two spots on the sales chart this week, but this was more due to weakness in the overall numbers rather than strength of the new releases. The number one film was 17 Again with $12.03 million from 679,000 units. This was just ahead of I Love You, Man with 676,000 units sold generating $11.00 million in sales. Race to Witch Mountain reached 1 million units sold with 275,000 units for the week and 1.04 million units after two. Meanwhile Fast and Furious slipped to fourth place with 208,000 units / $3.72 million for the week for running tallies of 2.39 million units / $39.78 million. Rounding out the top five was Obsessed with 205,000 units for the week giving it a total of 746,000 units and $12.40 million after two.

Road Trip - Beer Pong, which 37,00 units and $706,000 placing 24th in the process.

Despite the lack of major High Definitions releases, Blu-ray was mostly flat down a mere 2.2% to $15.8 million for the week. However, that was 231% higher than the same weekend last year, which is the fourth week in a row where 2009 is up more than 200% from 2008. Compared to DVD, Blu-ray represented 10.8% of the total sales and 13.4% of the top 20 comparison. The best selling Blu-ray of the week was I Love You, Man, which sold just under 100,000 units on Blu-ray, while 17 Again sold just over 40,000 units.
