International Top Five - Basterds Bring Glory to Tarantino

September 2, 2009

Inglourious Basterds remained in first place with $19.89 million on 2854 screens in 31 markets for a total of $59.63 million internationally and $132.66 million worldwide. The film had no major openings this week and its holds were all over the map. On the one hand, it was down just 22% in Germany adding $3.28 million on 461 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.54 million after two. On the other hand, the film was down 65% in the U.K. to just $1.83 million on 443 screens over the weekend, but it has earned a nearly identical $9.52 million after two. Other markets where the film took top spot include France, where the film added $5.4 million over the weekend for a total of $13.5 million after two, while in Australia it added $1.79 million on 266 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.49 million. The next major market opening for the film is Spain in a couple weeks, while it has major market openings till the end of November. Even if the film didn't have any major market openings, it would still reach $100 million internationally and $200 million worldwide, which would make it the biggest hit of Quentin Tarantino's career.

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs leapt into second place with $16.09 million on 5458 screens in 51 markets for a total of $637.02 million internationally and $830.27 million worldwide. This was mostly due to the film's opening in Italy, where it debuted in first place with $11.19 million on 806 screens. Even if it holds on well here, $900 million worldwide is likely out of reach, but it could get close.

The Final Destination opened in third place with $10.79 million on 912 screens in 5 markets. Nearly half of that came from the U.K., where it opened in first place with $5.22 million on 427 screens. While almost all of the rest came from France where it made $4.3 million, but it had to settle for second place in that market.

Twentieth Century Boys - Chapter 3 opened in first place in Japan and fourth place internationally with $9.42 million on 374 screens. This is more than the rest of the top ten in that market earned over the weekend.

Rounding out the top five was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, again. This week it added $7.52 million on 4828 screens in 54 markets lifting its total to $620.00 million internationally and $914.26 million worldwide. It opened in Greece over the weekend, but we don't have box office numbers yet. That is the last market for the movie, but it should catch up to The Order of the Phoenix before too long.
