International Details - 51 Goes Planetwide

Planet 51 started its international run in a limited fashion, but was only a little better than its domestic opening. Its biggest market was Russia, where it placed fourth with $1.49 million on 344 screens, which is on par with its opening here, perhaps a little bit stronger. The film also placed fourth in Italy with $1.16 million on 255 screens, which is again on par with the US, but perhaps a little weaker. Overall, it landed in sixth place with $3.22 million on 894 screens in 6 markets during its opening weekend, but should improve this weekend when it opens in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil.

  • Up fell out of the top five with $3.01 million on 2,436 screens in 32 markets for a total of $379.44 million internationally and $672.31 million worldwide. The film's only $1 million market was the U.K. where it added $1.07 million on 621 screens over the weekend for a total of $55.68 million after seven weeks of release.
  • Law Abiding Citizen returned to the chart in a big way, leaping into eighth place with $2.68 million on 704 screens in 13 markets for a still early total of $8.86 million. It opened in third place in Germany with $1.69 million on 300 screens, which is weaker than its debut here. It opens in the U.K. this weekend. If it can do well there, it might pop into the top five.
  • Couples Retreat's stay in the top five was short-lived, as it fell to ninth place this past weekend with $2.41 million on 901 screens in 23 markets for a total of $37.62 million. The film is struggling internationally compared to its domestic run, but this is not surprising as it stars Vince Vaughn and most Frat Pack members have very little drawing power outside the United States.
  • Pope Joan remained in second place in Germany with $1.78 million on 537 screens over the weekend for a total of $21.64 million after a month. This is about equivalent to $125 million to $150 million stateside. Overall it made $2.03 million on 648 screens in four markets for a total of $24.41 million, also after a month of release.
  • Inglourious Basterds returned to the top thirty this past weekend and just missed the top ten with $1.98 million on 883 screens in 26 markets for a total of $190.75 million internationally and $311.03 million worldwide. Its Japanese opening was soft at just $1.43 million on 315 screens over the weekend and $1.80 million in total, which means $200 million internationally is likely out of the question. That said, it is still a huge hit, the biggest in Quentin Tarantino's career.
  • White Night opened in 12th place internationally and 2nd place in South Korea with $1.95 million on 363 screens over the weekend and $2.30 million in total.
  • No More Cry climbed into 13th place internationally while it fell to fourth place in Japan with $1.91 million on 303 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.48 million after two.
  • Valley Of The Wolves - Gladio opened in 14th place with $1.82 million on 384 screens in 5 markets. This includes a second place debut in Turkey where it pulled in $1.51 million on 311 screens. This is well below the nearly $6 million the original opened with back in 2006, but still good for a Turkish film in its native market.
  • Le Concert added $1.80 million on 357 screens in 2 markets for a total of $8.46 million internationally. Of that total, $8.19 million was earned in France, including $1.67 million on 343 screens this past weekend.
  • Panda Express opened with $1.76 million on 275 screens, which was enough for 16th place internationally, but we don't have its placing in its native China.
  • Paranormal Activity reached the top 30 for the first time in its run with $1.73 million on 563 screens in 14 markets for a still early total of $1.73 million internationally. The film opened in Germany over the past weekend but only managed to snag 8th place with $847,000 on 201 screens, which is weaker than its opening in Russia a couple weeks ago ($1.14 million on 234 screens) and well below its best single weekend here.
  • Twilight returned to the chart in 18th place with $1.65 million on 634 screens in 3 markets for a total of $203.67 million internationally and $396.14 million worldwide. Most of this came from the film's performance in Germany, where it placed fourth with $1.41 million on 565 screens over the weekend to lift its total to $26.44 million.
  • Cell 211 continues its excellent holds, down a mere 11% in its third weekend of release in Spain with $1.59 million on 220 screens over the weekend and a total of $7.14 million after three.
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was hit hard this past weekend, down more than 50%, while falling from 6th place to 20th. It was able to earn another $1.57 million on 486 screens in 7 markets for a total of $23.75 million internationally. Lack of major market openings took its toll, but the film hasn't exactly been a major hit. In France, the film added $1.23 million on 237 screens, but that was for the full week and it only has $3.37 million after two. That's equivalent to about $20 million here, if you take into account the relative size of the two markets.
  • G-Force also suffered this past weekend, down more than 10 spots to 21st with $1.57 million on 1,383 screens in 27 markets for a total of $159.19 million internationally and $278.44 million worldwide.
  • Likewise, The Men Who Stare At Goats plummeted from ninth to 22nd with $1.54 million on 541 screens in 3 markets for a very early international total of $11.37 million.
  • Fortune Salon fell to third place in South Korea and 23rd place internationally with $1.51 million on 357 screens over the weekend and $6.12 million after two.
  • Broken Embraces earned $1.44 million on 453 screens in 8 markets over the weekend for a total of $31.64 million internationally. The film remained in third place in Italy with $1.20 million on 340 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.47 million after two.
  • Trésor had one of the worst declines on the chart this past weekend, down more than 50% and plummeting from seventh place to 25th place. It did add $1.39 million on 455 screens in 2 markets for a total of $4.70 million. This includes $1.33 million on 441 screens in France giving the film $4.46 million in its native market.
  • Fellow French film, Le Petit Nicolas, earned $1.31 million on 631 screens in 3 markets over the weekend for a total of $49.79 million. In its native market, the film added $1.21 million on 588 screens for a total of $46.51 million after eight weeks of release.
  • The Box slipped a couple spots to 27th place with $1.23 million on 694 screens in 12 markets for a total of $8.04 million. The film opened in Russia over the past weekend, but struggled, landing in fifth place with just $421,000 on 180 screens. That's really weak, even compared to its opening here.
  • Harry Brown added $1.20 million on 354 screens in the U.K. over the weekend, giving it $4.48 million after two.
  • Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani spent its third weekend in the top 30 adding $1.19 million on 615 screens in 12 markets for a total of $15.17 million, which is strong for an Indian film and more than enough to consider it a hit.
  • Rapt opened in sixth place in France and 30th place internationally with $1.18 million on 179 screens.
