Weekend Estimates: Blind Side Scores in 3rd
The Blind Side rode tremendous word of mouth to a 3rd weekend victory at the box office, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Although the movie fell nearly 50% from its Thanksgiving performance, that was better than any other movie in the top ten, and gave the drama a safe $5 million lead over second place New Moon. Blind Side is estimated at $20.44 million for the weekend, New Moon will come in around $15.7 million.
Everybody's Fine managed only $4 million from 2,133 theaters. The film's marketing was badly hit by the recent lay-offs at Miramax, so its box office performance isn't entirely surprising. The distributor has some serious regrouping to do in 2010.
Transylmania was the first release for Full Circle Releasing, who evidently set their sights (and sites) too high. The movie managed only $274,000 from over 1,000 venues.
In limited release, Up in the Air rode its NBR Best Picture win to an opening weekend of $1.185 million in just 15 theaters. That's not quite as high as Precious' opening weekend a month or so ago, but still bodes extremely well for the future.
The Princess and the Frog continued to perform very strongly in two theaters. Its real test comes up next weekend.
