DVD Sales: 2010 Starts with a Hangover

None of the new releases were able to take top spot on the DVD sales chart for January 3, leaving The Hangover in first place for the third week in a row. It added 692,000 units and $12.43 million to take its running tallies to 6.63 million units and $125.40 million.
The best of the new releases was Paranormal Activity, which was well back in second place with 375,000 units and $6.25 million. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince remained in third place with 275,000 units to lift its total sales to 6.94 million units and $92.43 million.
District 9 fell to fourth with 221,000 units / $3.56 million over the week and 1.20 million units and $20.25 million after two.
Glee: Volume One placed fifth with 213,000 units, while it was third in terms of dollars with $5.22 million.
9 just missed the top five with 171,000 units / $2.90 million, which is weaker than expected.
The last new release to chart was Jennifer's Body, which placed 11th with 105,000 units / $1.67 million.
The best selling Blu-ray for the week was The Hangover at just over 170,000 units, while second place went to District 9 at just under 150,000 units. The best new release was Paranormal Activity at around 75,000 units for third place. With new releases not pulling their weight, it's no surprise that Blu-ray sales slip from last week to $37.7 million, according to analysis by Home Media Magazine, but that's still 55% higher than the same weekend last year.
