Avatar Becomes Top-Grossing Domestic Movie

February 3, 2010

With Fox's official numbers for Tuesday released, Avatar has become the top-grossing movie in North America ever, overtaking a record held for over a decade by Titanic. On the day that it received nine Oscar nominations, Avatar grossed $2,688,514 (surprisingly a little down from Monday) to take its total North American gross to $601,141,551.

With Awards Season to come, and continued strong week-to-week holds, the movie now has a good shot at reaching an unprecedented $700 million in box office receipts in the North American market (which consists of the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam). Topping Titanic in ticket sales, however, looks unlikely -- it would need close to a billion dollars to reach that mark, after adjusting for general ticket price inflation and the premium earned by 3D and IMAX ticket sales.
