March 28, 2010

The top five films on the international scene were published on Wednesday and can be found here.

Just Another Pandora's Box started its international run in sixth place with $7.57 million on 417 screens in 2 markets. These two markets include Hong Kong, where it placed third with $333,000 on 33 screens.

  • Green Zone fell to seventh place with $7.44 million on 2120 screens in 23 markets for a total of $20.43 million. The film opened in fifth place in Germany, earning $1.07 million on 348 screens (including previews). Meanwhile, it fell more than 50% in the U.K., earning fifth place with $1.53 million on 419 screens over the weekend for a total of $5.88 million after two.
  • Heartbreaker opened in France and a couple other markets, earning eighth place with $7.17 million on 399 screens in 3 markets. In its native market it pulled in $6.43 million on 379 screens, enough for first place.
  • The Round Up was right behind with $5.55 million on 731 screens in 3 markets for a total of $13.28 million. In France, it was pushed into second place by another local hit, but it still added $4.91 million on 702 screens, only down 12% from its opening. So far the film has made $11.75 million in its native market, which is equivalent to $60 or $70 million here, given the relative size of the two markets.
  • Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief just grabbed onto the final spot in the top ten with $4.91 million on 3670 screens in 50 markets for a total of $129.88 million internationally and $214.92 million worldwide. In Italy, it earned $1.09 million on 287 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.08 million after two.
  • The Book of Eli returned to the chart in 11th place with $4.71 million on 1406 screens in 30 markets for a total of $43.19 million. In Spain the film opened in first place with $1.86 million on 301 screens over the weekend for a total of $2.01 million. In Brazil it also topped the chart, earning $1.08 million on 195 screens. It still has debuts in a trio of major markets (Australia, South Korea, and Japan) and it could come close to matching its domestic run on the international scene.
  • Sherlock Holmes fell to 12th place with $3.66 million on 1113 screens in 13 markets for a total of $298.64 million internationally and $506.54 million worldwide. It became just the 73rd film to reach the half billion mark and it likely already has $300 million internationally. That will be the film's final major milestone, though it could climb a few more spots on the all-time list.
  • Remember Me expanded during the past weekend, doubling its opening weekend take with $3.20 million on 939 screens in 13 markets for a total of $5.45 million. The film opened in Russia, but it only managed fifth place with $1.82 million on 290 screens. Meanwhile, in Australia it fell more than 50% and out of the top ten with just $249,000 on 174 screens over the weekend for a total of just $916,000 after two.
  • The Blind Side rose to 14th place with $3.18 million on 913 screens in 19 markets for a total of $14.07 million. It opened in second place in Mexico with $820,000 on 300 screens, while in Brazil it placed third with $737,000 on 104 screens.
  • It's Complicated saw further growth this past weekend as it climbed nearly 40%, reaching 15th place. Over the weekend it added $3.17 million on 1356 screens in 27 markets for a total of $102.38 million after three months of release. The film opened in third place in Italy with $1.66 million on 302 screens, which is respectable business.
  • Doraemon The Movie: Nobita's Mermaid Legend led the way in Japan for the third weekend in a row, adding $3.05 million on 366 screens over the weekend for a total of $15.19 million.
  • The Hurt Locker fell to 17th place with $2.76 million on 759 screens in 32 markets for a total of $22.14 million.
  • Edge Of Darkness opened in Italy, but only managed sixth place with $871,000 on 272 screens. Overall it slipped a couple spots to 18th with $2.65 million on 1604 screens in 26 markets for a total of $33.40 million.
  • A lack of major market openings left The Men Who Stare At Goats falling more than ten spots to 19th. It still managed $2.58 million on 919 screens in 11 markets over the weekend for a total of $32.71 million.
  • Pretty Cure All Stars DX 2 opened in third place in Japan and 20th place internationally with $2.46 million on 159 screens. It had the best per screen average in its native market and the third place on the international chart.
  • The Princess and the Frog fell out of the top twenty but still added $2.38 million on 2331 screens in 29 markets to its total of $157.13 million internationally. Its worldwide total rose to $261.41 million.
  • Loose Cannons remained in second place in Italy with $2.34 million on 423 screens over the weekend for a total of $6.70 million after two.
  • Liar Game: The Final Stage fell to fifth place in Japan with $2.04 million on 283 screens over the weekend. That was enough for the film to earn 23rd place internationally, lifting its total to $15.20 million after three weeks of release.
  • Star Dogs 3D opened in fourth place in Russia and 24th place internationally with $2.04 million on 578 screens.
  • The Tooth Fairy returned to the chart in 25th place with $1.93 million on 779 screens in 14 markets for a total of $40.75 million. It was aided by a third place, $1.18 million opening on 402 screens in Germany, which is better than average for its international run so far.
  • I Love You, Philip Morris returned to the chart after more than a month of absence with $1.81 million on 523 screens in 10 markets for a total of $7.94 million. In the U.K. it opened in fourth place with $1.60 million on 342 screens. This does not bode well for its opening here.
  • The Ghost Writer nearly fell out of the top 30 with $1.78 million on 677 screens in 7 markets for a total of $12.55 million.
  • Nine returned to the chart in 28th place with $1.71 million on 736 screens in 24 markets for a total of $30.84 million. It opened in Japan in sixth place with $1.33 million on 313 screens overt the weekend for a total of $1.76 million. This is disappointing, as musicals tend to do well in that market. However, compared to the rest of its run, this was not unexpected.
  • Pistol Bandit Band opened in third place in South Korea and 29th place internationally with $1.57 million on 321 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.92 million.
  • The Spy Next Door returned to the chart, barely, grabbing 30th place with $1.55 million on 697 screens in 12 markets for a total of just $19.47 million after more than two months of release. The vast majority of its weekend haul came from two major market openings, led by the U.K. where it placed sixth with $1.05 million on 332 screens. In Mexico it opened in fifth place with $364,000 on 240 screens.
