DVD Releases for January 6, 2004

January 6, 2004

Every week films get a second chance at success from the home market; or, in some cases, a first chance at success. Here is a list of wide releases, limited releases and even one or two from the growing TV on DVD section. This week is much busier, including more than half the list from the TV on DVD section.

Here's a list of DVDs released tomorrow, January 6, 2004.

Babylon 5 - Season 4 (Buy from Amazon): The fourth, and arguably the best season of the Sci-Fi hit series, Babylon 5. Can also be purchased as part of a four season box set. Since there were five seasons, it might be premature to purchase that. But if you're going to get just one season of this show, make it this one.

Cheers - Season 2 (Buy from Amazon): One of the most beloved TV series of all-time. The First Season was released more than half a year ago, but hopefully it won't take another six years for me to finish my collection.

Coral Reef Adventure - (Buy from Amazon): In an attempt to find another revenue source for IMAX films, some are being released on DVD for the home market. I'm not sure if this will work as the large, large screen is one of the selling points of the films and a home market could reduce the legs of the IMAX release.

Family Business - The Complete 1st Season (Buy from Amazon): An X-Rated reality series about the life of a porn star. This is the strangest entry on this week's list and definitely one that is not for everyone.

Frasier - Season 2 (Buy from Amazon): One of only 3 comedies to last 11 seasons on the air, the others being M*A*S*H and the aforementioned Cheers. This series is also following the release schedule of Cheers and it will take years before all seasons have been released.

The New Guy: Director's Cut - (Buy from Amazon): Did this film really need a Director's Cut? A commentary by the cast a crew was added, as was an extra four minutes of deleted footage. But that hardly seems like it's enough to warrant a new release.

Out of Time - (Buy from Amazon): This movie was a disappointment when it first hit screens this past fall, but now it has a second chance to succeed on the home market. With a mid-ranged budget, it won't take too much for MGM to recoup its loses from the Domestic run.

The Shield: Season Two - (Buy from Amazon): Another second season TV on DVD set; that's three for the week. Very strange. This one is for the award winning cop drama from the F/X cable network. Since it is cable, there's more mature content then you'll find on the other two second season releases.

Spongebob Squarepants: The Seascape Capers - (Buy from Amazon): Ooooooooooohhhhh, Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! Absorbent and yellow and porous is he! SpongeBob Squarepants! Now everyone who has heard the theme song just once will have it stuck in their heads for the rest of the day. You're welcome. Another ten episodes of the bane of parents and the bounty of little kids and drunk college students everywhere. Should tide the little ones over till the movie comes out this November. If not, you can always pick up the complete first season.

Underworld - (Buty from Amazon: widescreen or Pan and Scan): There's already a sequel in the works, so the studio must have been happy with its performance. Happier than the critics were, at any rate.

Uptown Girls - (Buy from Amazon): This film should do better on the home market than it did at the domestic box office. Bad reviews will mostly be forgotten and audiences will be more forgiving renting it than paying full price at a theatre.
